Messina, along the north coast of the Island.
Marsala carries on a large business in the wine-
which bears Its name. It also deals iu corn,
fruit, cotton and salt. The population is nboul
20,000. It possesses a numbor of foreign com
mercial houses, the most Important of which
are English. It was a nourishing place under the
Romans, und its prosperity was maintained un
til the close of the fifteenth century. In 1682
the port was filled up by order of Charles V.
to prevent the fleets of Sollman II. from getting
possession, of It. It has uever completely re
covered from that disaster, nud vessels of a large
tuuuage cuuuot enter.
The attack on Marsala iudleutcs the plan
conceived by Garibaldi. He carries the strug
gle on the uorth coast of the island, where all
the strong places lire sltunted, and approaches
those positions, which, if seized on by him, will
give decisive result. Ou tho other hand the Nua-
poiitau army uppears to bo prepared tor au ener

attack, and-a good road had been formed to
unite the towns on the coast, so that the con
centration of troops might be readily and
promptly oifected. •
