SAVANNAH DAILY MORNING NEWS,
MONDAY, MAY 6, 1861,
SAVANNAH GA.
MONDAY MORNING, MAY 6, 1862
BY TELEGRAPH.
[Special Despatch to tho Savannah Morning Now*.]
From Richmond.
Richmond, May A— 1 The Alabama and Geor
gia troops were ordered from Lynchburg to Noi-
folk late last night.
Old Abe Inspects the Navy Yard at Washington.
Albxandhia, May 4.-Lincoln visited nml In
apected the navy yard to day. [No doubt the
navy yard feels bettor after the operation, lhc
old rail-splitter would know a soveuty-four from
a saw-mill, provided tho former had her guns
aboard.—Ei>. News.]
From New York.
New York. May 4.—Military companies from
tho interior of the 8tate are continually arriving.
The enrollment of troops in this city continues
with spirit, but some dissatisfaction is expressed
at. the delay in the movement of the troops.
There appears to be bad management some
where.
From Mobile.
Mobile, May 5.—The Continentals, one hun
dred and sixty strong, left here for Montgomery
to-day. The steamer had also on hoard several
resigned U. S. military officers front Texas, who
went to Montgomery to offer their services to
the Confederate States.
Nothing of iutcrcst from Pensacola.
It is reported that the port of Mobile will be
blockaded to-day.
W" We arc requested to slate that the num
ber of volunteers invited to Join the Carolina
Light Infantry, lor immediate service in Virgin
ia, in Col. Pettigrew's Regiment, Is not limited
to twenty-five, and tbut a few more members will
be rtcelvcd. Applicants can leave their names
at this office, or address Key Box I 111, Savannah
Post Office. ^
Steamer St. M^hy’b.—It will be seen by the
advertisement in another column that the steam
er fit. Mary'n, Captain Freeborn, will make
another trip to Florida on to-morrow afternoon,
leaving at 4 o'clock^ ^
Coroner’s Inquest.—Coroner Kpkn on Sa
turday afternoon Iasi held an inquest tft the de
pot of the Savannah, Albany and Gulf Railroad,
upon the body of Thomas Canfield.
pearanco when they were seised am! divided out
among the starving multitude of soldiers, each
man taking a ham, a sausage, a loaf or bread, or
Whatever else he could lay hands on.
The shocking want of organisation of regl-
menis and brigades, and the absence of discipline
and competent officers, we must confess, sur
prised us very greatiy\ ^ ^
Hark from the Toombs.—The New York
/fern/(I says:
Capt. John Lalor opened a recruiting office
yesterday morning at the Tombs, and before
three o'clock no less than forty men enrolled
their names. But thirty-seven more ere wanted,
and this number will probably be made up to
day. ^
(Spot-ini Despatch to tin* t’liarle*lon Courier.)
The Blockade Begun.
Richmond, April ‘J.-—The James River is
blockaded, and communication with Norfolk
cut off. The steamer Glencoe, for Norfolk, was
compelled to return.
Some citizens apprehend an attacK on Rich
mond. | Perhaps.]
Baltimore.—We presume that all now un’er-
stand that the Government design speedily open
ing and keeping open the communication be
tween this city and New York through Halil-
more ; peaceably, if Baltimore will permit it to
tie so accomplished—otherwise forcibly. To
that end troops will he rapidly accumulated al
three points—on the line of the Northern C’cti
iral Railroadi on, the line of the Baltimore ami
Wilmington road, aud ut Annapolis—advancing,
vve presume, simultaneously to the work. We
hope and pray that Baltimore may have snffi-
cicnilv recovered its senses to aid rather than ob
struct this necessary undertaking of the Govern
ment, ere the troops move forward to its execu
tion.— Washinyton Star, _
The Troops at Cairo.—The real meaning of
the concentration of troops at Cairo, Illinois,
now begins to appear. 1 seems that that point
in to he the rendezvous for the Indiana, Illinois
and a large part of the Ohio troops, making
together a very large proportion of the men call
od out by tin- President. Stationed at the mouth
of the Ohio this force will, of course, blockade
the Mississippi and rut oil nil supplies of pro
visions which tho South can receive from the
West; hill a smaller force might accomplish this
purpose.
\ reason sufficient to account for tho assem
bling of so large a force seems to be found in the
effect which It will have upon Missouri. The
government, by removing me content! of the
Nt. Louis arsenal, has prevented thesoccaslonlsls
in that State from arming themselves: and by
stationing n large force at Cairo, it lias also virtu
ally cut oil Hie communication between Missou
ri and thenth'T Southern Stales, as a glance ut
the map will show. With this force close to her
Southern border, on the only line of communi
cation. Missouri is isolated from her slavehol -
Ing neighbors, and may secede if

box car while tbc train was in motion, he was
crushed to death by the cars running over him.
His body was dreadfully mangled.
The Right Spirit.—We learn from the
Thomasville Reporter that the eitizons of that
county arc raising a military fund for the equip
ment and aid of the volunteer companies. The
fund already raised ntnounts to about three thou
sand dollars. Among tho contributors is a free
negro blacksmith, named (files Price, who, with
out prompting from anyone, went to lhe4reastt-
ror and asked to ho permitted to give one hun
dred dollars to aid tho white men who were
going to fight tho enemies of tho ftouth.
The War Spirit in Boston.
A movement is on foot in Huston to raise nod
equip a regiment to serve through the war. For
this purpose a subscription was taken up and
twelve thousand dollars immediately raised.
David Sp.aks, Thomas Lee, .Fames Lawrence,
8. Hooper, George O. IIovey and Mrs. Wm.
Pratt, cacli subscribed #1000. On tho list there
were nine subscriptions of #600 each, and ton of
S'JOOench. Among tho latter we find the name of
Joseph 8. Fay. Mr. Fay’s name also appears
in another subscription list for tilty dollars in
aid of an Irish regiment being organized in Bos
ton.
It would not perhaps be gratifying for Mr. Fay
to know that while lie is contributing his
means to send hireling mercenaries to invade
and devastate the South, those with whom lie
was long and closely associated wTiile here, are
contributing with equal liberality and giving
► their personal aid to repel the ruthless invaders
of their adopted home.
The Day of Grace is Pasted.
The New York llernld, alluding to tho expira
tion, on the r»th inst., of the time appointed by
Liucolr. for "the persona composing tho combi*
nations aforesaid to disperse and retlro peaceably
to their respective homes,” remarks:
The defensive policy of tlio government censes
after that day ; so that within tho next few days
wo may expect tub tar that General Scott lias
adopted tho oilenslvo svstem, nud lias sot in mo
tion some twenty or thirty thousand men lor the
occupation of Rle^inonii or Baltimore. This
is the meaning of those twenty days’ notice.
Old Abe, in that same memorable proclama
tion, said:
I deem it proper to say that the tlrst service as-
signed to tho forces hereby called forth will
probably be to re possess the forts, places anil
property which have bv.cn seized from the
The "day of grace" expired yesterduy, and uu*
less the proclamation was intended by facetious
Old Abe as a Joke, (and he is famous for Jokes,
vide his story about the Irishman tlut dld’nt
want to be haggled,) lie will have to take some
steps to make good his threats, or he will be
laughed to scoru by ills own friends. Wc there
fore need not bo surprised to hear of some hos
tile movement against the 8outh very shortly.
Tho old rail-splitter bus played out his brag and
bluster game. He is at the end of his rope, and
must either fight or run. If he adopts the llrst,
he will get most terribly "haggled.”
Going to Lyncuburu.— The Alabama and
Georgia regiments, now on their way to Virgi
nia, will proceed to the camp near Lynchburg,
Va.
[From the Philadelphia Nortli American, April 21 ]
Lincoln's Ragged Regiment.
It is greatly to bo feared that the raw troops
we are hurrying forward to tho seat of war are
not likely, from the condition they arc in, to
reflect much credit upon their State, or prove
very serviceable as soldiers. At Camp Curtin,
near Harrisburg, we are told by a gentleman
who had just returued from there, all is disor
ganization, aud tho gathering has more the ap
pearance of u mob than an army. I f the country
conipaute* and regiments which have pasoed
through Philadelphia may servo as fair speci
mens, we stiould Judge this report to ho true.
Alter midnight on Monday, they tired off guns
as they marched through the Bireels of our city.
We saw several companies. They had arrived
iu tbe city during the night, aud had nothing to
eat since leaving Harrisburg.,
When we saw them they were discontented,
insubordinate, and swearing at the city, their
officers and everything else. They bad each
man a loaf of bread stuck oti Lis bayonet, that
being the only way they could carry their next
raeul, as they had no knapsacks. A blanket was
slashed around tho body, aud some had what
teemed like a satchel hung at the sidq, which we.
took to be either u pouch for cartridges or
a place to put a ration of meet. Others had
no cartridge pouch at all, nud on being asked
pulled their cartridges out of their pockets,
which seemed to be stuffed full of them. One
man told us that he had been tarnished with no
rations since lie left his home in Iluntingdou.
A number of companies from Schuylkill look
ed as though taken fresh from the mines, hands
and ftcea being blacked with coal dust. Indeed,
an ol luem might be regarded fairly as the great
unwashed ; whether coming from Schuylkill or
anywhere else. As for uuiform, we did not see
the slightest pretence at it among any of these
men. One German company hud not even arms.
Several companies had no drummers, and there
was one regiment so completely disorgauised
that the men could not tell tbe names of any of
their officers, except the Colonel. Iuquiries for
the Quartermaster seemed to be fruitless, ns there
appeared to be none*, and yet there were over
•lx hundred men in thin regiment, commanded,
too, by a member of tho Legislature.
Tula is iuc Bort of material ol which the regi
ments from the interior are formed. In most
cases they are totally ignorant of tho organism-
tion of battalions, regiments and brigades, and
wc fear very much that half of them have not
proper regimental officers to provide for their
wants. Wc are aware of the difficulties sur
rounding so great a task as tho uniforming,
arming and provisioning of such masses; but it
is surprising that no adequate arrangements
have been made here to supply these poor fel
lows with food or quarters. On Monday night,
a company from the interior, in a famished state,
excited the commiseration of Lieut. Paullen, of
the Seventh Ward Police, so that he took up a
huuoeripuon among the spectators and raised
about fortv dollars, with which a good meal was
given to every man.
A regiment trom Western Pennsylvania, raw,
r mull, numshed, uud clamorous, marched into
t ie Continental Hotel ut midnight and ordered
& upper. The servants wen* all abed, no food was
cooked aud no orders hod been received to feed
tbe«e men. Nevertheless, tbe humane proprie
tors of the hotel hurriedly got together ham,
a vluw sending it to tbe rati
road depot, whither the men were to be march-
M* Scarcely had these provisions mode their ap-
vertiner.
Southern Equipments Seized.—Sergeant*
E»terbrook and Brackett, of the Second Pro
duct, visited Smith’s manufactory, No. IB Dutch
street, on Saturday, by order of Superintendent
Kennedy, aud seized a large quantity of waist
mil side licit plates, intended for the South Caro
lina soldiers, and also dies lor making similar ar
ticle* for that Stale, Virginia, Texas, Georgia,
Alabama, Arkansas and North Carolina.

The Armistice Rumors.— All the late ru
mors about the disposition of the Government
to enter into an armislice with those making war
upon the United Slates, are entirely untrue.—
Since Sumter was attacked, it is well ‘known no
such idea lias been considered by the Govern
nunl’s counsels.— Washi nylon Star.
