MONDAY MORNING, JANUARY G, 1862-
BY TKLl’JiUAJM 1.
From Richmond.
Richmond, Jan. 5.—The Yankcoa Imre recent
ly been making incursions on the. Peninsula,
destroying considerable property about Bethel.
General Lee telegraphs the War Department,
from South Carolina, that the Yankees have re
treated from the mainland and* gone to Port
Royal Island.
Conflicting reports roach us from the moun
tains, but it is evident that the Federal* are
making demonstrations at various points.
The mail agent from Staunton tells the Post
master that Colonel Johnson, at All»*ghany,
says ho can hold his position, hut apprehends
that his supplies nmy he Interrupted.
a copy of these proceedings he
forwarded to the family of the deceased ; and to
the Savannah Morning News and Central Geor
gian, with n request that they publish the same.

. Yankee Diplomacy.
In another column we publish a fuller synop
sis of the correspondence between 8l:\vahd und
Lord Lyons in reference to the surrender of
Messrs. Mason andSmdell. II anything could
add to the, deep huiniliatioirnud disgrace of the
Yankee nation after the pusilanitnous surrender
of the Commissioners, whose se izure they had
sanctioned and applauded, and which they so
Vttuutingly pledged themselves to defend to the
last extremity, certainly the pitiful, shuffling,
unmanly diplomacy ol their Secretary of State
bhuuld dye their foreheads with a deeper blush
of bhuine. The surrender was an act of coward
ly propitiation of the outraged British Govern
ment, hut in so mean a spirit his it been pur-
formed by the political Peter Funk who holds
the chair of State of the Lincoln despotism,
that it might as well not have becu performed at
nil. The English Government will accept the fact
in satisfaction of its specific demand, but the
manner of it, the sly iuuuudos, transparent soph
isms and shallow pretences with which the
Secretary attempts to cover up Ins pAiiruoiicry,
while it will increase the contempt of the Eng
lish nation for him and the. people whom he rep
resents, will ho sure to warm up and iuteusih
the popular spirit of resentment caused by the
insult to their flag.
The Yankees may imagine that by their niter
stultification and truculent submission they b i ••
appeased the wrath of the English nation, b.n
common tense should tench them that if Li.g
laud was willing to make the issue of war wun
them forthe restitution of the .Southern C*»ni
luissiouers, she is not without other questions
of adjustment, which can be made equally avail
able, aud that, Interest and Inclination comm
ring, she will lmrdly bo iueliued to forego her
purpose because of her recent triumph in tbei
humiliation.
Senator Hale, in his recent speech, alluding
to the demand of England lor the surreudr
Mason and Slidell, said: “If Great Britain
has made ibis demand, it was because she was
predetermined to wage war. If we are to he
humiliated, let it be after a war, uot before It.”
He was right. Aud now that their humiliation
is complete, Englaud will be none tbe less “pro*
determined. faho will uot now be deterred by
Yankee bluster and bravado from pursuing the
policy dictated to her by inexorable necessity —
that policy leads to the speedy recognition of
the Confederate Stales, and the opening of our
ports to her commerce.

We learn that dispatches were received in ul-
ficial quarters hero on Saturday, stating that the
enemy had retired from Beaufort Island and the
main-land, and pone back to their iVirtilleations
on Hilton Head. This sudden movement is
probably preparatory loan attack at some other
point on the Carolina coast, where they expect
our troops will uot be so well piepared to meet
them. The command of the water navigation
gives them the advantage of laeility of move
ment, aud they no doubt flatter themselves that
having drawn the attention of our Geueruls to
the neighborhood of Gardner's Comer aud the
railroad, our forces will he uuprspured to repel
them at whatever other point of attack they may
select. In this they will be mistaken. Before
they can debark their forces aud obtain a foot ;
hold on the main-land, they will find themselves
confronted by a force sulliciunt to drive them
hack attain to the protection of their ships.
