THEATRE, COVENT GARDEN.
FRIDAY night Mr. Harris devoted the emoluments of
his Iloufe towards the Voluntary Contributions now
©pen at tlie -Bank for the Defence of our Country. The
public fecondtd the generosity of the Manager; the Theatre
was mod refpeftably filled; and the Play, “ England
Preferred,” was incomparably well performed, aud re

OCCASIONAL PROLOGUE.
Spoken by Mr. Holman.
WHEN Pcrfia’s Tyrant to tli’ Athenian coast
Sent forth, indignant, his barbarian ho'fl,
At Freedom’s call a firm and faithful band
Undaunted rose, to guard their native land,
Their valor forc’d unnumber’d foes to yield,
Pursued o’er Marathon’s immortal field.
When Rome, superior to the dorms of fate,
Saw Afric’s Chieftain thund’ring at her gate,
With ftedfalt foul she brav’d th’ impending blow,
Nor (loop’d to parley with the ‘.rated foe.
Lives there a Briton, bftfs’d with Freedom’s laws,
Left firm, less faithful'to his Country’s cause?
Breathes there a foul, which patriot zeal inspires,
But feels lier wrongs, and glows with equal fires?
Wnile, with gigantic firideS, o’er Europe’s plains,
Tel! Rapine stalks, .and Defobtion reigns,
While fierce Oppression, with iniultiny claim,
Mocks Freedom’s rights, yet rules in Freedom’s name,
Tins envied Me alone its fury braves,
Safe in her valiant sons and circling waves;
Crown’d with the bliss that genuine Freedom knows,
She fpums th’ infidiots boon of treacherous foes;
And hears unmov’d tie gath’ring temped roar,
Though hods unnumler’d threat her lea girt diore.
Oh! then, let each prepare, with dauntless heart,
At Britain’s call, to aft a Briton’s part!
Ye- generous youths, whom active vigor fire?,
Stand forth and emulate our glorious fires,
Infpir’d, like them, your Country’s rights to Oileld,
Remember Agincourt and Blenheim’s field!
Ye titled great, display your native worth,
Let valor vindicate the claims of birth!
Ye sons of wealth, with bounty cheer the train
Who guard our fiiores, and triumph gn the main! ’
Yc fair, for whom we toil, for whom we bleed,
With finiles reward each high diftinguifh’d deed!
So (hall one heart, one foul, inspirit all,
Bravely to conquer, or as bravely fall;
So, crown’d with vift’ry, may our labors ceaft,
And reap its harvest in the fruits of peace!
