Augujl 22. Yeßcrday the Herald (loop of war, of 20 guns, Capt. Sever, and the Pickering arme * brig, of 14 guns, Capt. Pickering, failed on a cruise. Yeflerday arrived in town from Bayonne, via Marblehead, Mr. Hinklev, late Mate of the Galen. He brought no papers, but informs that he heard Lord* St. Vincent had gone into the Mediterranean in pursuit of the Toulon fleet, leaving a squadron to confine the Spaniards to Cadiz; that a war was exprfted with America, and pri vateers were equipping for tlie indiferiminate capture of our vessels. On the banks of Newfoundland spoke a filb ing schooner that had fallen in with the brig. Maria of Bos ton, Capt. Hatch, from Bourdeaux for Cliarleßon, that had met with brig Sophia, from Havre for Philadelphia, on board of which Air. Gerry was a pafienger. Two men yeflerday morning were found in a cellar, one Aupificd Bill with liquor, the other fuffneated by the water. Augujl 21. The United-States schooner Retaliation (formerly Le Croyable French privateer) is nearly fitted for sea, carrying 12 guns. She is commanded by Capt. Letters received yeflerday from New York inform that the yellow fever has appeared in several parts of that city, and ocealioned a number of deaths. The Ganges (loop of war, having finiflied her cruise of three months, lies at Afarcus Hook in the hands of the car penters. She will be altered so as to carry her guns between decks. Notwithfl inding reports to the contrary flie is proved to be a very fad failing veflel. Capt. Alexander Alurray of this citv is appointed to the Command of tlie Montezuma (loop of war, of 22 guns, now lying at Baltimore ready for sea. Capt. Bowen, of the fliip Voltaire, in 68 days from St. * Peterflmrgh, informs, that a few days before he failed a Ruffian squadron of 5 fliips of the line, 2 frigates, and 2 cutters* Tailed, it was said, for England. Arrived this day, the Swedish barque Resolution, Capt. G.fmaf Keftenius, from Naples and Leghorn,- lafl from Malaga, 58 da vs. Capt. Keftenius, who left Alalaga tiie isl of July, has politely favored us with the following intelligence, corro borative of former accounts: That in the beginning of June, in his paflage from Naples to Malaga, he fell in with Buonaparte’s fleet, going up the Mediterranean, with a number of troops on board, bound, it was for the Crimea; that, while at Malaga, he learns they had been fallen in’with by Admiral Nelson, who took FOUR of the number, but what force had not been afeertained; and that the fleet had* been dispersed, and put back into Corsica and Leghorn: That the French had n< Ugot ]>er miffion to march through Spain to attack Portugal, as re ported:, That a peace was daily expefted between England and Spain; but that the French Bill continue to aft as they please in the ports of the latter: That about 30 Americans and Danes were condemned at-Mttkiga while lie lay there by the French Con fill without the form of a trial, and that as many more would Ihortly meet the lame fate; of the Americans he does not know the names of any: That the French take and condemn even* American they come aero is in the Mediterranean, be they bJsund where they may.
