Yesterday about 11 o’clock the malefactors in ihe east wing of the new gaol made an attempt to break out; taking advantage of the Doctor’s visiting them, as the Turnkey was shutting the door of the east wing they rushed forward, knocked him down and advanced towards the front gate; by which time the Keepers, Capt. Whartpn, and others, who were in the outer part of the gaol, flew to their arms, which were prepared for an attempt of this kind, when they fired on the ringleader, who would probably have killed the Turnkey with the second stroke he was preparing to give him with an axe he had picked uo. The Ihot took effeft and he dropped, which intimidated the remainder, and they fled to their cells. The culprit wounded died in less than an hour. He is a fellow confined for money making. Arrived this morning, the United States frigate, Commodore Barry, from a cruise. life Delaware sloop of war is below, with a prize fchooiier of 12 guns and 87 men, and a flocp (Sans Pareil) of 10 guns and 67 men, captured by the frigate near Porto Rico, which they left 1 o days since. Capt. Smith informs us that while he was at Cape Fran, cois, about the Bth of August, a Bricifh flag of truce arrived there from Cape Nichola Mole, requesting Gen. Hedouville to fend and take pofll {lion of the place. Capt. Barney failed 4 dajs before Capt. Smith left the Cape for France, in a pilot boat built febooner, formerly belonging to Baltimore. Charlefion , October 1. Saturday arrived tire fliip Mary, Hunter, Greenock, 49 days. Yesterday arrived the ftiip Maria, Inglis, London, 41 days. The Maria left London on the 16th of August, and the Downs; on the 20th. The snow Harmony arrived at Gravefend on the 18 th of August. The fliip Harmony, Earl, arrived at Dover on the 4th of August. On the 18 th of August the convoy for America failed from Pprtfmouth; it was to touch at Cork. Tire Pacific, Kennedy, arrived at Gravefend on the 9th of August. > The Atlantic, Dean, failed for this port on the 7th; the Attive, Tinker, on the 10th. The ship Carolina, Malcolm, wits to fail for this port the Ift of September; and the Flarmony, Earl, and Au gusta, Roberts, the loth. The Ann and Susan pafled Gravefend on the 1 oth June for this port. The Lucretia, Seabury, is arrived at Greenock. Air. Gerry arrived at Portsmouth in the United States brig Sophia from France, and was to fail in her with the convoy. At all the ports of St. Domingo (fays a Bermuda paper) the greatest distress is experienced for the want oi flour and proviflons* ORober 2. The fliip Fox, late Lincoln, belonging to this port, which was captured by an Englifli privateer, carried into Grenada, and tailed from there the latter end of June, is arrived at London. The Modeftie, Jansen, has arrived at Bremen from this port. ORober 5. The PrulTian fliip Hazard, Capt. Kolm, which failed from this port on the 20th April last, bound for Amlferdam, was captured by an Engliih privateer, and carried into Leith, in Scotland. SAVANNAH, Oftober 11. MARINE LIST. Schooner Greyhound, Burridge, George Town Brig Defiance, Hughes, Jamaica Schooner Cornelia, Spooner, Alexandria The Alargarets, Currie, from this port, is arrived at Greenock. On Sunday the 22d of July last was executed at Savanna la Mar, (Jamaica) purluant to his sentence, Samuel Graham,- for the murder of a Negro man, his own pro perty. The following paragraph is extracted from the (Augusta) Southern Centinel of Thursday last: “ A letter from an ofticer at Fort Wilkinson to his friend in this place mentions, that information had been received there of presents, to the amount of 18,000 dol lars, having been sent to Fenfiicola for the Indians. In August 1793 deaths were 264; iji August 1798 the deaths were 621. An Hungarian Gazette contain* the following fetter from SemTrn, dated Jtrly 9: \y e have received from Belgrade the moft diftftrous account* relative to the attack made on Widdin cn the 27th of Jure. The Captain Piicha, Olinan Paclia, and Muftapha Pacha, in confequeni e cf the orders they had received, endeavored to carry Widdin by aflault; they had fuceecded in taking the lower city, when they were received by a fire of grape {hot, so strong and well dirtffed, that in a flroit time the field of battle was covered with dead bodies. The Captain Pacha and Ofnran Pacha were felled, and ATuftapha Paclu fared himfelf with the greatest difficulty. This Sift attempt could not have been more unfortunate; we are impatient to know ti e consequences it has had.” Paris, July 26. The ship L’Heureux Decide, of Bour. deaux, Capt. Noel, has taken, after an engagement of an hour and a half; a vcflbl, of 380 tons, and 18 gurr, the greater part of which were 36 pounders. It was bound from Chariefton to London, under American colors, and it was not until it had been brought into port that it wai difeovered to be an American. Its cargo confided rs 154 clefts cf white lugar; 212 bags of ditto; 126 chests of biowl sugar; 400 bags cf ccffce; 2GO bales of cotton; 65 hogfi heads of tobacco; 3 17 barrels of rice; 12 barrels of indigo; and 18,000 ftaves. July 29. Anew embargo has been lai don all the vef ftls in our ports which are distinguished by the name of neutral ones. July 30. It is reported that Paul I. has refolvcd tr declare war against the Batavian Republic, arid to confifeatt all Dutch property in his dominions. August 2. A fetter firm Genoa gives the following account cf the capture of La Senfibfc: “ I have to communicate to you a very difagreeall* of pews. Buonaparte had sent Baraguey d’Hiliierr with cifpatches for the Direftorv, and on tire oth lew?* taken prisoner by an Engliilr frigate. Our veflel fought very ill; the crew was composed of Afaltefe, a set of pol troons, whom d’Hiliiers could not prevail upon to figh‘, but by threatening to beat or run them through; we had 60 men killed; the Captain, who is a fool, did not per ceive the enemy till they were within irmlket fiiot; we were obliged to strike, as the Englifli were preparing to board. D’Hiliiers was incensed at the Captain and crew*; lie is not dangerously wounded, though his clothes were pierced all over with balls; he had time to throw his dis patches overboard. D’Hilliers and his Aids dc Camp were taken to Gibraltar, where they now are, but they are to be sent to London. We hope that the French Govern ment will get hirh exchanged, which is his due; he fought with an Englifli officer who attempted to take his fworo, and vefufed to give it up but with his life. Citizen Collot, who was likewise taken, has been released; he is going to Paris, and will inform the Directory of this unfortunate event. D’Hilliers is very well treated; nothing has been taken from him.*’ Augujl 8. Letters from Medina, received at Havre, state, that on the 20th of June a division of 14 Engliih (hips of war pasted before Medina, while another division of it (hips failed to the southward. The inhabitants of Medina shewed the tnoft lively e** preffions of joy at the fight of the Englifli, and treated tz French nation with the grofleft terms of difrefpeft.
