The British have sent a squadron to the Cape of Good Hope under Commodore Blanket. I; ha 3 on board four regiments of regulars. The Dutch have a Commodore Winter. The Englifti have lately commissioned a Commodore Blanket to give him a warm embrace. Among the victims of the present epidemic we have to lament that of Mr. Archibald M‘Ltan, one of the Editors and Proprietors of the New York Daily Gazette and Ge neral Advertiser, who breatl.ed his left on Saturday night after three days illneft. He fell a vicTuu to the prevailing deftrueftive disease ytfterday. His constant attention to the duties of his office, and particularly Ifiv anxious zeal for the welfare of the city at this trying crisis, will long be remembered. This city has loft in him one who watched over it with the affectionate tenejernefs or a parent—a humane and virtuous Magistrate. Burials for 24 hoiirs ending yesterday at noon, 77. Ninety-five new cases of the prevailing fever were re ported for the last 24 hours by 14 phvficiaiis. The following handbill has been circulated in the city* REFFECT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! ‘ My fellow citizens, reflect upon your danger before it is too latei One hundred of us are attacked with the fever every day. One half of that number is daily carried to the grave. If we remain in town it is probable that the fever will continue five or fix weeks longer, and by that time one half of our number will have been Tick, and one fourth cf us will be no more. ‘ How different is the situation of our friends in the coun try and in the tents. • Two thousand persons in -the tents have left but feven tecn-in twenty-five days, while the fame number in Phila delphia have left one hundred and seventy-eight. At tiie encampment there is great plenty of good food. In town it is refelved to give nothing to the poor who arc able to go. WHY DO YOU PREFER FAMINE, SICKNESS, AND DEATH, TO HEALTH AND PLENTY? A letter is in town, we un derhand, from the Collector of the Guftoms near Currituck, informing that a French privateer of 12 guns has been cruff ing off Cape Hatteras, and has taken and plundered feveial veflels. - Accctints from -Vermont mention the reele&ion of Mat thew Lyon by a large majority. Charicjlon , October 6. Arrived, brig Light Horse, Gibson, London, 48 days. OSlober 8. Ihe Light Horse failed under convoy of the Agincourt of 64 guns, Admiral Waldegrave, and” the Rambler and Pluto (loops of war, with the Englilh fleet bound to Newfoundland; there were fi\e other American veflels, one belonging to Bcftoh, three to New York, and one to Norfolk, that took advantage of the fame ’convov* The Light Horse parted with, the convoy 15 days ago. Capt. Gibson fpcaks in the highest terms of the attention and kindness of Admiral Waldegrave; inagaleof wind on the pafiage the Light Horse loft her fore top mast, bowsprit, and head, and in less than 20 minutes the Admiral sent 9 carpenters and other hands and repaired the. damage. Appointment* George Cross, Captain in the Navy of the United States. Capt. Cross received his commilfion from the President of the United States on Friday. OSlober 9. A letter from Philadelphia received by the mail of this day fays, “ Our city is entirely depopulated— the streets are cleared—and here and there you will meet with Negroes conveying dead bodies to the grave yards.” During the time the fever raged in Philadelphia in the year 1793 the number 6f Inhabitants who left the city was cfti.nated at 17,00 c; the number that lias, left it this year is laid to be yo,oop~ OSlober 12. Yesterday arrived the Grip Harmony,- Mulder, Havana,, n days; brig John, Tate, Havana, n day s; fehooner Sally, Stanton, Havana, 11 days; schoo ner Ranger, Booth, Havana, 11 days. These veflels failed from the Havana with upwards of 421 fail bound to the northern ports, under convoy of the Con stellation frigate, Capt. Truxton, and the Baltimore (loop of war, Capt. Philips, of 24 guns, the latter of which ref ills is now off cur bar, and will remain there for a day -cr two. The Confteilation has gone on with the remainder cf the convoy.
