The Ihips Augusta, Roberts, and Harmony, Earle, for this port, and the Carolina, Malcolm, for Savannah, failed with the fleet. Capt. Marlhall parted with these (hips 26 days ago. 1 be Ihip Carolina, Cooke, had arrived at London from this port. In an event of this importance I have thought it right to fend Capt. Capel with a copy of my letter (to the Commander in chief) over land, which I hope their Lordlhips will approve, and beg leave to refer them to Capt. The enemy were moored in a strong line of battle for defending the entrance of the Bay, (of (hoals) flanked by munertuis gun boats, four frigates, and a battery of guns and mortars on an island in their van; but nothing could withstand the squadron yoflf Lotdfhip did me the honor to place under my commandi Their high state of diicipline is well known to you, and with the judg ment of the Captains, together with their valor, and that of the officers and men of every delcription, is ablolutely irresistible, Could any thing from my pen add to the fcliara<flers of tM Captains I woulfl Write it with pleasure, but that is impofiible. Weftcott of the Ma jeftick, who was killed early in tlie action; but the fliip was continued to be so well fought by her firll Lieutenant, Mr. Cutlibert, that I have given him an order to command her till yout Lord (hip’s pleasure is known. The (hips of the enemy, all but their two rear fliips, are all nearly difmafted; and thoie two, with two frigates, I am sorry to fay, made their escape; nor was it, I allure you, in my power to prevent them. Capt. Hood ni'oft handsomely endeavored to do it; but I had no Ihip in a condition td support the Zealous, and I was obliged to call her in. The support arid afiiftahce I have received from Capt. Berry cannot be fuffieientlv exprefled. I was wounded in the bead, and obliged to lie carried off the deck; but the fervlce differed 110 loss by that event.- Capt. Berry was fully equal to the important service then going on, and to him I mult beg leave to refer you for every information relative to the victory.
