H ihnngton, (North Carolina) November 8. When the Editor, of the Wilmington Gazette informs .his fublcrib ers of liis having been one of the many unfortunate people who were deprived of their habitations by the late fire in this town no other apology will be required.for the non appearance of the Gazette'laft week* 1 hat dreadful calamity, whereby three fourths of what remained of the town of Wilmington after the.fire of April last lias been reduced to allies, happened on Wednesday the 31st u!t At about 3 o’clock in the morning of the laid day Haines were difeovered issuing through the roof of a tavcrti on Front street, adjoining Mr. Urquhart’s at the corner of Dock street, occupied by a Mr. Parilh. Ihe wind blowing very ftelh, thelfire was rapidly communicated to life neighboring houses and (lores in every direction, and in a few hours all the buildings from the fbuth fide of Market street to Dock street, including those on the south fide of the latter as far as Mr. Muter’s (which efcapcd) eaftwarcl from the river to 1 bird street; were con sumed, excepting a few houses on the hills. . Tl * conflagration became lb extenlive before the inha bitants were in a capacity to make any effort to check its fury that very foer> almost all hope of (living any part of the town was abandoned, and tlie exertions of individuals were chiefly employed to refeue such of their moveables as time would allow of from cleftrueVion. The Courthouse being unfortunately (ituated in tlie centre of the small square formed by the interfe&ion of Market and Front streets, upon the prefervarion of that building, (which is exailly calculated to convey the flames to the four quarters of the town) depended whether any thing of tlie whole town should remain but a heap of* rubbifii. Here at length great efforts were made, and finally that edifice, and that small remnant of this once flourilhing place from the north fide of Market ffrees were mod nliraculoufly preferved* The loss sustained by the proprietors of the buildings destroyed cannot easily be computed. ‘Fhe number of dwelling and warehouses is from 130 to 150. Many of the families who have loft their habitations will be at a loss for accommodation, and probably mud find re fuge in the country tlie poorer class will fuffer severely. Much giods were laved, but the lpfs in that particular is no doubt very great. In fliort, luilefs aid is afbrded by contributions from the generous and humane in tue opulent cities with which the United States abound, very many years will elapse before Wilmington will recover it; former confeqyence, and many families be coniigned to deplorable indigence. Mr. Pariili, in whole liojle the calamity originated, lias pubfiihed an exculpation a himfclf, and alcribes the acci dent to fome defecT in tlu, chironvy tiiereof. Upon tills head we cannot take upon is to give an opinion. We hope however that his allegation deserve credit, for certainly there ii vfery little differena ui point of criminality betwixt the wilful incendiary and qie who by carelessness becomes the inflrument of canveyiig deilruclion to bis neighbors projjerty, and involving a Mholc community in diftreft and mbs The ccrpfe of a deceafedfailor, and of a poor man who I had b:cn on the pariji, were rnfum-J j n t i r . r , ‘ “ happily no lives were loft. . • ■ nre, 1 On Monday last was committed to the “ad n c .
