A PRO CLAM A T l ON. -
WHEREAS tlie J neral Aflembly of this slate palled
an a<sl, on the sixteenth day of Febniary inflant,
entitled, “ An Aft to compel ill Officers, Civil and Mi
litary, to take and fubferibe an Oath to support the Confu
tation thereof.” in the words following, to wit:
“ WHEREAS it is neceflary that all Officers, Civil
and Military, within this slate, fliould be bound to support
and maintain the Conflitution of the fame, be it therefore
enacted, That all and every Officer, Civil and Military,
holding any office under the authority of this slate, by
commiifion or otherwise, shall take and fubferibe the fol
lowing oath before the Clerk of the Superior or Inferior
Courts of the county in which he may reside, or, if a State
Officer, before his Excellency the Governor for the time
being, to wit: I A. B ldo solemnly swear, or affirm, (as
the case may be) that 1 will bear true faith and allegiance
to the State of Georgia, and, to the utmofl of my power
and ability, observe, conform to, support, and defend the
Conflitution thereof, and the Conflitution of the United
States; so help me God.
“ And be it further enabled, That all Officers who are
row in commiflion, Civil or Military, except such State
Officers as have been elected by the General Aflembly at
this present session, and have been duly qualified before his
Excellency the Governor, shall, witlyn the term of fix
months, take and fubferibe the aforefaid oath, in manner
’ and form aforefaid, which lhall be made of record by the
Officer before whom it is taken; and in case of refufal or
negleft of any Officer, his office shall be considered null
and void, and his Excellency the Governor is hereby au
thorized and required to fill up such vacancy in the fame
manner as if it had been made by death, resignation, or
removal from the diflrift; and in case any Sheriff, Clerk
of the Superior or Inferior Court, or any other Officer
having office or trust under the authority of this slate,
shall negleft or refufe to take the aforefaid oath, in man
ner and form aforefaid, within the term of fix months,
their aft or adls, as they appertain to the said office, {hall
be conlidered null and void.”
I HAVE THEREFORE THOUGHT FIT to ifTue
this my proclamation, notifying and requiring all Officers,
Civil and Military, within this slate, comprehended in the
said a<sl, to conform thereto, by appearing before the pro
per Officer and taking the said oath, within the period
thereby limited, as they will answer the contrary at their
peril.
Given under my hand, and the great fcal of the
said slate, at the Statehouse in Louisville, this
eighteenth day of February, in the year of our
Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety
nine, and in thj twenty-third year of American
Independence.

April next, meet at the Courthouses in their refpeftive
counties, antWlominate two Juflices cf the Peace in each
Captain’s diflrid, agreeably to the sth fedtion of the 3d
article of the Conffitution, and certify and tranfrnit the
fame to his Excellency the Governor:”

at Savannah on Turfday the 1 2tii day of Febni
ary, 1709. Chriflopher Gunn, Daniel Scull, and Edward
Griffith, having been drawn and duly summoned, according
to law, to serve as Petit Jurors, on being called made de
fault. and were noted for non-attendance,
It is ordered, That they be fined in the firm of 10 dol
lars each, unlcfs they do severally and refpeftlvely make
good and fufficient exudes, on oath, for their non-attend
ance, to be filed in tlie Clerk s Office on or before the firfl
day of the next term, and that this order le thrice pub
lished for their information.

of tlie Inferior Court will attend at the Clerk’s Office

at ten o’clock in the forenoon of that day. in order to ap
point the lax Return Receiver and the Tax Collector for
the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine.

THE united Turkish and Ruffian fleets have taken the
islands of Cerigo, Zante, and Ceplialsnia; also the
harbor of Corfu, with all the French flapping therein.

“ The new and so much talked of conspiracy againfl the
present order of things has at lafl been difeovered. The
conspirators did not only intend to abolifli the exiling Go
vernment, the /Direftorv, and ti e Popular Keprelenta
tives, and to introduce the fyflem of terror, but to unite
with the Braidst insurgents. But our vigilant Government
fruflrated their designs, and in the evening of the 19th in
flant, at 11 o’clock, the following persons were apprehended
in the house of Citizen Voorfladt, by order of the MinHler
of the Police, viz. D. Hoffman, Member of the 2d Cham
ber; P. Grovenevold, refi'ding here; A. Voodgs of Shied
am, late a Member of the Conflitutional Aflemhly; F.
W. M. Roifch, late Mayor of the city of Delft; Vefler,
late Me mber of the Court ot Juflice at Friefland; Kalte
nar and Romyn, residing at AmfWdam; with the above
named Citizen Voorfladt; the latter was again set at li
berty.”

“ According to an intercepted letter from a French
officer in Egypt, published at Conflar.tinople, the French
are strongly fortified at Alexandria; the harbor is defended
by fifty 24 pounders and twenty mortars; the batteries are
mounted with 80 fieldpieces.”
