The trade with St. Domingo was going on, but did not
answer the expectations of either the Jamaica or American
adventurers. Touffaint had been victor in fome severe

Yesterday arrived here from Havana in. a Spanill) King’s

Puke of Orleans, his two brothers, the Duke of Mont

understand thele illultrious personages intend embracing
earlivit opportunity of going to England.
In congruence of an information that the Master of a
Suanilb licensed vessel was lately murdered on board a
Ajvateer belonging to this port, the Master of the priva
tecr was vefterday committed to gaol. We” forbear en
tering upon any detail, as the whole bufinels will soon
undergo a legal investigation.
The American brig Calliope, Brown, from New York
for New Orleans, detained by the privateer 1 Hope, John
son, arrived here on Sunday.
SALEM, September 6.
/\ SHIP belonging to Mr. Bartlett of Newburyport,
i. X carrying about 12 guns and 30 men, and com
manded by Capt. Chafe, was lately captured on her liome
paffage from’ Surinam by a French privateer of about
n,ip was bravely defended, and’tK e arfa i fan ts’ were repui T'a
in two attempts to board, but succeeded in the third, 5 of
Capt. Chase’s men being killed, and himfelf and a confi
deiable number of his men wounded. The ship was very
valuable; flie is carried to Guadaloupe.
Bojton , September 14. On the 29th July Capt. Clarke
left Cadiz, and passed through the English fleet, at about
0 leagues w. s. w. of Cadiz. The fleet consisted of 32
Lil of the line, besides frigates; of the ships of the line
tj were three deckers. They were fleering to the north
ward. It was not known where the French and Spanish
“cets were bound, conjecture made Brest their object, in
order to embark troops for Ireland; while many supposed
their fleering to the westward to be only a ruse dcguerre,
to induce the Britifli to leave the Mediterranean, and then
to pass into it again.
New York, September 18. The United States brig
Pickering has captured a French privatebr of 16 guns, and
carried her into St. Christopher’s.
The Pickering has also retakep the schooner Cynthia
of this port.
Baltimore, September 19. By the arrival of the
schooner Moncrieif, Capt. E. Pearce, in 22 days from Su
rinam, we are politely favored by Capt. Pearce with the
following intelligence. On the 12th of August an English
fleet under the command of Lord Seymour, Vice Admiral
of the Blue, confiding of five line of battle ships, of 98
guns, (the Admiral’s) and one of 74, with fix frigates,
and as many transports, (the land forces under the com
mand of Lieut. Gen. 1 rigge) made their appearance off
the mouth of Surinam river, and sent a flag of truce'tw
the Governor, demanding poflelTion of Surinam and its
cependencies in 24 hours, on the following terms, as near
as Capt. Pearce recollects:

&c. to be delivered to the English.
The Dutch and Spanish i'oldiers to march out from the
fort? with the honors of war.
That no alteration would be made in the government,
ina tint all Dutch property should remain in the situation

the whole of her children, 5 in number.* The inhabitants
are flying in every direction. We hear also that the fame
disease is raging in Washington.”

Fail-American, Forrester, Falmouth, 50 .days.
On the morning of the. j 3th July a fire was difeovered
in one of the wings of the King's Bench Prison, London.
The flames increased with lb much rapidity that the vvhole
extent of the building, from the ‘Tap to the Chapel, con
taining nearly 100 rooms, were burnt. No personal in
jury was sustained.
This day arrived, fliip Six Sifters, Rolfen, Hamburgh,
84 days. ‘
September 30. Arrived last night, fliip Two Friends,
Capt. M‘Neil, London, 63 davs. ‘
The fliip John, 49 days frorii Liverpool, anchored in
the roads on Saturday. It was reported at Liverpool when
the John failed that the combined French and Spanish
fleets had put into Brest.
On the 7th August Capt. Rolfen, of the fliip
ers, was boarded by a French privateer, who put on board
1 o Americans belonging to the ship Amey of New York,
and 5 belonging to a brig bound from this port for Tene
rlffe, which veflels the privateer had captured.

October 4. Yesterday arrived, brig Two Friends,
Borden, Hamburgh, 105 dajs; brig Amity, Soutliwitk,
