mentioned by Capt. Burrall, of the New York mail packet
Sui’an; On hispafiage laid week from New York, when he
cams off Cape Look Out, he obfefved large quantities of
fob, of different kinds, ‘floating on the furface of the ocean,
the mod of them dead, others with fome remains of life,
but to appearance expiring. This uncommon appearance
continued until he came to Cape Fear, a distance of near
y 0 m iles. Night then came on, and he saw done the next
morning. He saw them on each ilde of his vessel as far
as he could diftinguilh them; they confided generally of
final! filh, fuc.h as porgies, mullets, black filli, and others
that are known to frequent our coasts.
We are'’ informed that the proceedings in the Court of
Admiralty again ft the French -schooner Adelaide, which
was taken off the Havana by the brig General Pinckney,
Capt. Hayward, fome weeks ago, and lent into this port,

NASSAU, (New Providence) September 27.
r TMIE following extraordinary narrative is handed to
JL the Printer by.Mr. Thomas Forster, a young man
in the employ of Messrs. Dean, Cunningham, and Cos. of
this place, who was Supercargo of the schooner Mark An- j
thon'y, William Kemp, Mafler, from this port for Haneuga:
“ On Saturday, September 14., clole in with Long
Key, near Crooked Eland, made 10 fail of vessels, bearing
s. s. w. Not wifliing to (peak them run c’o'e in With the
land and dropt anchor. At Bp. M. 2 armed .brigs came
dole to the schooner; without-hailing one of them fired a
gun (hotted, and on getting nearer i’oon after difeharged
a whole broadlide. The other brig followed htreonfort’s
example, and both kept up a fire with few intervals till
midnight, before which time every person of the i’choon
ei’s people, except mvfelf, had quitted her and gone On
ihore. They now hailed, and were answered “ from Ne w
Providence.” A boat with -about 12 armed men then came
alongside and boarded the schooner. They a iked many
quellions, which were civilly an 1 were 3. They then aired
me for the veflcl’s papers, which I told them were in the
Mailer’s chest, and that he was on fliore. They immedi
ately broke open the cheft,.ufi'ng the most-abusive language,
took out the vessel’s papers and a number cf private letters.
The latter they opened and read; after tearing up the vef
feFs papers they threw the fragments back into “the trunk,
and filled it full of water. They then broke open my
trunk and robbed-mfe-of 15 dollars, a watch, ali my ■'clothes
excepting those on my back, and threatened even to tlrip
me of them; they also took ail the clothing-they could lay
hands on, took away a pair of 3 pounders, ieVeral fails,
rigging, compasses, quadrant $> furniture, &c. injaft left
the schooner almoli an entire wreck. Oh my asking who
they were, where they belonged to, and from whence they
came, they beat me moll unmercifully, infbmuch that for
several days I was foarcely able to dir abput. One half
of the men on board went on fliore in quell cf the jclioon
er’s people, faying if they caught the Captain they would
l-, a ng him at the lore yard to be Ihot at as a mark. Not
finding any of them they returned on board, renewed their
depredations, damned the Governor and all the people of
New Providence for piratical rascals, and then returned to
their vessel, which immediately made fail and Hood to the
northward.
“ When they went nfhore they cut the boat adrift, so
that the fchoouer’s people on Ihore could not get oil. Alter
the brigs made fail I swam to the ihore and found cur
’ people, 3 of whom and mvfelf swam off to the f hooner,
got her under way, and went after the boat, which we
took up.
“ The people who boarded the schooner appeared to be
Americans, and I fuppoled the whole to be a convoy from
St. Domingo for the continent.”
October 1. Our apprebenfions of a severe equinoctial
gale are now Ixappily dissipated. On Sunday afternoon
and evening - appearances were very lowering, and about
midnight and early next morning we had a tremendous
“fall of rain. Since then the wind has blown a trelh breeze
from its molt favorable quarter E. x< e. and the tempera
ture of the air is now extremely cool and plealant.
