r "'IIF. arrival,.yc In rdr.v of’ the Viper, Betsey, and
X Fancy, from the Couft, has brought fomc interell
ing additional intelligence rtfpecting .the occir rences at
Seiingapatani previous to, during, and lubfequi-nt to the
llorm of that lorirds. 1 liat l inpoo was laid to have r.ro
pofecl a negotiation atone time, hat that half hb country
and two crore of rupees being demanded of him, and four
of his lons, with four of his principal officers, required as
hostages, lie liad refufed tiiel'e conditions. That tlit*re was
in Gen. Idarris’3 army apolitical Committee, con lifting of
Col. Vi’ellefley, Lieut. Cols. Cloi’c and Aguew, and
Capt. ATrdcolm, with Capt.. Malcolm for their Secretary;
to whom Lord Mornington had added (Jens. Stuart and
-FUutley. That in the course of the operations of the
Madras army an officer and to or 12 Europeans unfor
tunately fell into Tiupoo’s poke ikon alive, who fufi’eied a
cruel death bv nails being driven into their heads. That
Iris hatred to all Europeans was unconquerable, and al
though in league with the French he treated them on all
occaiions with contempt; about 50 of that nation were
found in the fort, chiefly of the party landed left year
from the Mauritius. That the .treasure in ipecie was eft
imate'd at 30 lacks of pagodas, different jewels at 60 lacks,
and pearls at from 3 to 4 lacks. Tliat fcefides Sc*'*ed
Goffar, Meer Shaddock, and fevcral Meer Meerans, T ip
pco loft in the florin from 800 to icoo men. That the
Sultan had general information that the rdf:.lilt was to
take place in the course of* the-day, and that he had
fear ceiv given the neceffaey orders to the Kill ad ar in con
fequcncc, when the If Wife and tumult announced the ap
proach of th.c* llonr.ing party, on which T’ippoo repaired to
his own station, where he was killed; he had received a
wound on the fame morning, but after retiring to his pa
lace to have it drefled returned to h‘s duty, an!! this was
t!ie last light he had of his family. On tire 6th tilt, thev
experienced a dreadful llorm, in which Lieut. Grant of
the 77th, and Capt. Barclay of the Madras army, were
killed by lightning. t
June 22. A letter from Sciingapatam, dated 26th
May, mention :, that of the jewels not above 6 or 7 lacks
of pagodas worth had been then valued; and as to the
merchandise, viz. mullins, lhawls, and various rich
cloths, they were reckoned at the enormous amount of
vto camel loud. The Sultan’s throne being too unwieldy*
to carry had been’broken up; it was a howdar upon a tiger
covered with llieet gold; the afeent to it was bv liivcr ileus
gilt, having liivcr nails, and all the other faftenings of the
fame metal; the canopy was alike iiipcrb, and decorated
with a costly fringe of line pearls all around it; the eyes
and teeth of the tiger were of glal’s; it was valued 60,cc0
pagodas. -It was laid that a dividend to the value of about
a million sterling would soon be made; part of it, to the
amount of 17 lacks of pagodas, in calh, the rest in jewels;
a Committee had been appointed for the arrangement of
it. ,
Other advices from Seringapavmi, dated the 27th May,
mention, that in breaking up tiie throne, which its buik i
and weight, rendered necessary, the ftieot of gold with ‘j
which it was covered was found to weigh 40,00 c pagodas;
the fiver work about the iupporters of tiie canopy, and
the fringe of pearls which vent round it, were valued at
10.000 pagodas more; every inch of the howdar contained
