* Downing fireet, September 24.
THE fallowin'? dispatch has this day been received
from the duke of York by the right lion. Henry
Dundas. t
Headquarters , Shagen Bnig, September 20.
Sip,,—ln mv dispatch of the 16th init. I acquainted yon
■with mv intention of making an attack upon the whole oi
the enemy’s.polition the moment that the reinforcements
joined. Upon the 19th, every neceflary arrangement being
made, the army moved forward in four principal columns
in the following order: The left column, under the com
mand of lieut. gen. fir Ralph Abercromby, confiding ol
two squadrons of the 18th light dragoons, major gen. the
carl of Chatham’s brigade, major gen. Moore’s brigade,
major gen. the earl of Cavan’s brigade, if battalion ol
British grenadiers of the line, if battalion ot light infant
ry of tlie line, the 23d and 55th regiments under col.
Macdonald, defined to turn the enemy’s right on the Zuy
der Zee,-inarched at 6 o’clock on the evening of the 18 th:
The columns upon the right, the firft commanded by lieut.
gen. D’Haritian, confiding of the 7th light dragoons,* 12
battalions of Ruffians, and major gen. Manners’s brigade;
the second, commanded by” lieut. gen. Dundas, confiding
of two squadrons of t.he 1 ith light dragoons, two brigades
of foot guards, and major gen. prince William’s brigade;
the third column, commanded by licutt - gen. fir James
Pultency, confiding of two squadrons of the iilli light
dragoons, major gen. Don’s brigade, and major gen.
Coote’s brigade; marched from the politions they occupied
at daybreak the morning of the 19th. The object of.the
ffift column was to drive the enemy from the heights oi
Camper Duync, the villages under these heights, and fin
ally to take pofteffion of Bergen; the second was to force
the enemy’s polition at Walirrenhuyfeii and Schoreldam,
ar.d to cooperate with the column under lieut. gen. D’Har
man;* an 1 the third to take pofteffion of Ouds Carpitl, at
the head of the Lange Dyke, a great road leading to Alk
m ler.
• It is neceflary to observe that the country in which we
had to aft prelented, in every direction, the in; ft formid
aMe olift.teles, The enemy upon their left occupied to
great advantage the high fund hills which extend from the
lea in front of Rotten to the town of Bergen, and was in
trenched in three intermediate villages. The country over
which the columns under lieut. gens. Dundas and -fir James
Pultency had to move for the attack of the fortified polls
of Wal nenhuvfen, Schoreldam, and the Lange Dyke, is
a ol fin interfefted every 3 or 400 yards by broad deep wet
ditche.-. and canals. The bridges across the only two or
tlir e roads which led to these places were deft roved, and
a!.- ntis wear laid at different distances.
Lieut, gen. DTlcrman’s column commenced its attack,
wlit.li was conducted with the greatest spirit and gallantry,
at half pad 3 o’clock in the morning, and by 8 had luc
re..- led in lb great a degree as to be in pofteffion of Ber
j a. 111 the wooded country which surrounds this tillage
tb” principal force of the enemy was placed, and the Rlll
li .11 troops, advancing with an intrepidity which overlook
ed the formidable rciilkmce with w hich they were to meet,
bad not retained that order which was neceflary to pre
fer', e the advantages they had gained, and they were in
consequence, after a mod vigorous resistance, obliged to
retire from Bergen, (where I am much concerned to state
lieuts. gen. D’lierman and Tchertfchckoff were made pri
loiv-rs, the latter dangeroufty wounded) and fall back upon
Schoreldam, which village they were also forced to aban
don, but which was immediately retaken by major gen.
Manners’s brigade, notwithstanding the very heavy fire of
the enemy. Here this brigade was immediately reinforced
by two battalions of Ruffians, which had cooperated with
lieut. gen, Dundas in the attack of Walmenhuyft-n, by
m ijor gen. Doyley’s brigade of gi’prds, and by the 35th
n gimciit under the command of his highness prince Wil
liam. Ihe action was renewed by these troops for a con
fi.’.er.ihle time with fucccfs, but the entire want of ammu
nition on the part of the Ruffians, and the exhauftecl state
of the whole corps engaged in that particular situation, ob
liged them to retire, which they did in good order, upon
Petten and the Zuyder Slays.
As loon as it was fufficiently light the attack upon the
viltagi of VValincniiuvli-T., where the enemy was ibongiy
polled with cannon, was made by liiu't. gen. Dunclas.
Three battalions of Ruffi uib, who formed a leparate corps
dcdined to cooperate drorn Krabherrdarn in this attack,
commanded by major gen. Stdnioratzky, very gallantly
lloniicd the village on its left flank, while at the fame
time it was entered on the right by the id regiment of
guards. The grenadier battalion of the guards had been
previoullv detached to march upon Schoreldam, on the
left of lieut. gen. DTlerinan’s column, as was the 3d re
g’.'m iit of guards and the 2d battalion of the sth regiment,
to keep up the communication with that of lieut. gem fir
J one's Pultency. The remainder of lieut. gen. Dundas’s
column, which, after tAiog pofteffion of Wahnenluiyfen,
had hern joined In the ift battalion of the sth regiment,
marched againll Schoreldam, which place thev maintain
ed, under a very heavy and galling fire, until the troops
engaged on their right had retired at the conclusion of the
aft’>on.

The well grounded hopes I had entertained of complete
fucccfs in this operation, and which were! fully just died by
the result of the three, and b/ the firft luccefies ot the
fourth attack upon the right, add to the great difapooiyt
ment I nurft naturally f.vl 011 this occafi-m; but the-cir
• cumftances which have occurred I ftiould have confide red
of very little general importance, had I not to lament the
lot": of many brave officers and fiddlers, both oi his majesty’s
and the Ruffian troops, who have fallen.
The gallantry ilififlayed by the’ troops engaged, the spirit
with which they overcame every obft.icL* which nature and
art opposed to thtun, and tlie cheerfulne's with which they
maintained the fatigues of an aftion which lasted without
intermifilon from half past 3 o’clock in the morning until 5
in the afternoon,.'are beyond mv powers to ddcribe or ex
tcl. Their exertions filly entitle them to the admiration
and gratitude of their king and country.
Having thus faithfully e’etailed the events rs this firft
attack, and paid the tribute of regret due to the diftinguiffied
merit of thole who fell, J have much ronfolation in being
able to state, that the effiorts which have been niad.e, al
thongli not crowned with immediate face els; fir far from
_ militating again!! the general object of, the campaign, pm
mifie to be highly ufeful to bur -future operations. The
capture of 60 officers and upwards, of 3 cco men, withthe
deftruftion tis 16. pieces of cannon, with large .supplies of
-ammunition, which tlie interH.-fted nature of the country
did not admit of‘being witljlrv a, are convincing proofs
tliat the loss of.the enemy in the field has been far luperior
to our own; and,'in addition to this, it is material to state,
that nearly 15,000 of the allied troops had unavoidably no
(bare in this action.
In viewing the ieveral circumfianccs which occurred
during this arduous day I cannot avoid expreiTing the ob
ligations I owe to lieut. gens. Dundas and lir'J. Pultcney,
tor their able affifiance, and also to mention mv great fa
ti .fiction at the couduft of major gens, his highnels prince
\V illiarn, D’Oyley, Manners, Barra-rd, and Don, to whole
Ijfiiitcd exertions the credit gained by tlie brigades they
commanded is greatly to be imputed.
Ca.pt. fir Home I’opliam, and tlie fc-veral officers of niy
fiaffi, exerted tliemfelves to the utmost, and rendered me
moft effiential fen ice. I feel also much indebted to the
lpirited conduft of a. detachment of lea nun, under the di
reftion of fir Home Popliam and capt. Godfrey of the navv,
in the conduft ot three gun boats, each carrying one 12
pound carronaue, which acted with considerable effi-ft on
the Aikmaer canr.l; nor mu ft: I omit exprefting iny ac
knowledgments to the Ruffian major gens. Kftbn, Sedmo
ratzky, and Scbutorffi.
I tranlmit herewith returns of the killed, wounded, and
miffing.
I am, fir, yom's, ftc. Frederick.
P.. S. Not having yit received returns of the loss of the
Ruffian troops, J can only observe, that I underhand their
loss m killed, wounded, and miffing, amounts to near
1500 men.
Return of the ‘killed, wounded, end miffing.
lotil: 1 lieutenant colonel, 2 captains, 2 subalterns,
1 fiaffi, 2 ferjeants, 100 rank and file, killed; 7 lieutenant
colonels, 6 majors, 15 captains, 15 subalterns, 20 fer
jeaiits, 2 drummers, 345 rank and file, ’ wounded; 22
ierjeants, 5 drurmners, 463 rank aiid file, niffimg.
N. B. 350 rank and file of th,e ill: battalion of the ,35th
regiment cannot exaft ly be accounted for, from the nature
ot tlie aftion, and from the regiment being font immedi
ately to the Holder in charge of prisoners, Rut it is much
feared that nearly 100 are killed, and the remainder
wounded and miffing.
