LON’DOJT, September 10.
A DREADFUL fire broke out on the 7th tilt. at Bal
laffa, in Hungary, which burnt with such violence
that in less than two hour* 568 houses, the Lutheran
church, and the poflhoufe, were consumed; not more than
50 houses were left (landing; two women, two children,
and a Jew, loft their live* on the occasion, and die whole
damage is estimated at 900,000 florins.
On the nth ult. another fire nearly destroyed the vil
lage of Falkenheim, in Bavaria, with the church and the
townhouse.
September n. Our cruiferr on the Lisbon station have
been extremely fuccefsful. ‘1 he Flora and fr i
gates have taken two Spanish (hips from South America
worth 20,0001. each. The Boadicea frigate’s prize is
worth 50,000!. The Netley schooner has taken a Spanish
packet worth 25,0001.
September 12. Letters from the army under the com
mand of fir James Pulteney, dated on the ift inst, from
Vigo bay, on the coast of Spain, concur in dating it as
the general opinion in the fleet that Gibraltar would be tire
next rendezvous of the anhament, and they were expelled
to put to sea again from Vigo bay on the 2d inst. How
far this opinion may be correct we will not pretend to fay,
but we think it not improbable, from the present circum
stances of Portugal, that they may now be at anchor in
the Tagus.
The expedition has been joined by the remaining part
of the guards, and Hompefch’s mounted riflemen from
Ireland.
We last night received by cxprefs Paris papers to the
9th inst. Their contents are not entitled to particular no
tice. It is only remarkable with how much care all men
tion of negotiation or communication with this country is
avoided. From different parts of the continent we find
articles which represent the date of the French armies as
equal to the contest in which they suppose they are shortly
to be engaged. An Augfburgli article of the 29th ult.
Bates, on the other hand, that the archduke Charles lias,
in the event of the resumption of hostilities, been prevailed
upon to take the command of the Austrian army. The
fellival of the New Year, according to tlie republican ca
lendar, which will begin on the 23d of September, is to be
celebrated according to a plan presented by the minister of
the interior, when particular honors are to be paid to the
memory of marihal Turcnne. Gen. Kleber, who fell on
the fame day with gen. Deffaix, (the 14th of June) is to
(hire in the monument which the French government have
voted to the memory of the latter general.
Yesterday arrived the Hamburgh mail due on Wednes
day. Its contents relate almost exclusively to the notice
which has been given by the French generals throughout
the whole line of the ceflation of the armistice, and the
consequences which it is supposed will result from that e
vent. The German not aware, perhaps, that
these consequences depend on circumfiances foreign to their
own country, (peculate on the bombardment of Philipf
burgh and of Ulm as immediately at hand. The defence
of Bohemia is Hated to be an objefl to which the Andrians
arc turning their attention, as that kingdom is threatened
with an invasion. A great part of the Austrian troops are
retreating towards the frontiers of it, in order to prevent
their retreat being cut ofFby the French divifton of Collaud.
An article from the bank of the Maine represents the
preparation for war in that quarter as being made by the
French with great adlivity. On the part of the Andrians,
if we may believe the Vienna article, which is of the 27th,
the fame adlivity docs not prevail, though the hopes of a
favorable answer from Paris are not sanguine.
In confequen.ee of the suspicions entertained by govern
ment, that a party in France is endeavoring to pillage this
country, by gambling in our funds, the duke of Portland
lias determined to fend every alien out of the country who
is known to be concerned in such tranfadlions.
September 13. It is mentioned that 40 bankrupts have
been declared at Amsterdam in consequence of the notice
given of the renewal of hostilities in Germany.
We understand that there are no less than it fail of
Spanish (hips of die line in Fcrrol harbor, which would of
course h'avo fallen into our hands had we made ourlelves
inafters of that place.
September 15. On Saturday the fqliadron under vice
admiral Dickson anchored in Yarmouth roads, from the
coast of Denmark, after having performed the important
ferviee which we already have had tile fatisfadlion of Bating
to the public.
By accounts received from the armament under the
command of fir James Pulteney and rear admiral fir John
Borlafc Warren, of the date of the 2d instant, we learn
that the troops were to proceed to the Mediterranean, un
der the convoy of the Gibraltar and Ajax line of battle
(hips, and that the rear admiral and the remainder of the
squadron ‘were to return to rejoin the grand fleet under the
earl of St. Vincent. We believe accounts have been re
ceived of that squadron having actually rejoined.
The report of this morning, in consequence of difpatchcs
„ having been received yesterday from lord Keitli in the
Mediterranean, is, that a revolt of the French army in
Egypt lias taken place since the death of gen. Kleber, and
that a deputation has been lent to the Englilh admiral
from the majority, prepofing to evacuate the country on
the terms originally iigned at El Arifc.h. We cannot
speak with much confidence to the truth of the statement.
