of this State, and of the- Militia thereof;
A proclamation.
WHEREAS official communication has been made
to the Executive of the death of James Jones,
late Representative of this state in the Congress of the Un
ited States: N: •• ■
And Whkeeas, in and by an s CI to regulate the Ge
neral Elections in this state, imJ to ap;x>int the time of
the.meeting of the General Assembly, puffed on the ele
venth day of February, one thousand seven hundred and
ninety-nirie, it is declared, “ That in case any person duly
ciedled, being in this state, and notified thereof, in man
ner herein directed, shall not within twenty’ days, and if
out of this state, within forty days after such notification,
signify his acceptance, or shall depart this life, the Governor
or Commander in chief shall order anew election to be
held in like manner as herein before pointed out: And fur
ther, that all writs of election to fill vacancies that may
happen for Members of the General Assembly of this state,
or House of Representatives of the United States, shall
be direiSfed to the Justices of the Inferior Courts of the
respective counties, who are hereby required to give public
notice thereof, and cause the same to be held in manner
and form as herein pointed out, agreeably to such writ:”
1 HAVE therefore thought fit to issue this my procla
mation, notifying, dircdling, and ordering, the respective
Justices of the Inferior Courts of tEG otnte to consider this
mv proclamation as a general writ of election for the dif
ferent counties of this state, for the purpose’ of filling the
vacancy of a Member in the House of Representatives of
the United States, in the room of the afore mentioned
James Jones, who was elected to that seat for two years
from the fourth day of March next: Anu I do hereby re
quire and charge the said Justices to promulgate this pro
clamation, 2nd give due notice thereof; which said election
shall be held in the respective coun'ics of the state, agree
ably to the terms and directions of the said aCt, on Mon
day the twenty-third day of March next, of which all per
sons are required to take due notice; and the said Justices
are hereby required to make due return of such election to
the Executive Department as in and by the said aft is
pointed out.
Given under my band, and the great seal of the
said state, at the statehouse in Louisville, this
tenth day ci February, in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight lumdred and one, and of the
Independence of the United States of America
the twenty-fifth.
