BOSTON, March 28.
LAST evening arrived the ftiip Aurora, capt. Stone,
124 days from Calcutta. In her came paffeiyger,
capt. George Lee, late of the brig Traveller of Bolton,
which was captured October 29, lat. 17. n. long. 99. 30.
E. by the French privateer La Ddle, capt. Nicholas Sour
cofF, (brother to the celebrated Sourcoff) all bands taken
out and put on board the schooner Sophia, in which they
arrived at Calcutta. La Dclle had captured five or fix
Engliffi vefiels, of which were the Helen, Minerva, Oan
ram, and Mayflower. The Traveller was From Lisbon,
bound to Calcutta, out three months, and had considerable
specie on board. Capt. Lee was well treated by capt. Sour
eoff, and the Englifli fay he used his prisoners with the
utmost humanity and politeness, permitting them to carry
with them as much of their baggage unexamined as the
smallness of his vefiel would admit of. La Ddle is a brig
of about 100 tons, moantsLi 2 guns, 4 and 6 pounders, 30
Europeans, and 30 or 40 CafTres; fire fails but very in
differently, but in calm weather rows nearly at the rate of
four miles an hour. The captain said he meant to cruise
between the Cocos and Broken Islands, with the view of
intercepting vefiels coining up the eaftcrn fide of the bay.

4 When the/Aurora failed a large fleet was fitting out at
Calcutta and for a secret expedition. Conje&ure
liad fattened 1 on several obje<?ts of defoliation, amongtt
which were the Isle of France, Batavia, and Manilla. To
expedite the equipment the work was prosecuted night and
day. The force was not known, a admiral Rainier, who
was to command the fleet, had not arrived from Madras,
but was momently expefted.
New York, April 3. The sloop Hiram, from Rich,
mond, Virginia, arrived here yesterday, brought in capt.
French and crew of the brig John Henderl'on, which vefiel,
on Sunday last, during the gale, lott her rudder and sprung
a leak, and in 12 hours after filled. The John Hender
son belonged to William Neilfon and Cos. and was bound
to London with a valuable cargo. The crew were taken
off on Monday last. The John Henderson had been out
onfy 3 days.
April 6. The United States frigate Eflex, which was
forced on (Lore by the violence of the gale last S.inday
night, has been got off and placed at her moorings with
out fuffering the leaf! damage.
“Philadelphia, April 12. For two days past strong ur.
w winds have prevailed. At the change of the tide last
right the frigate Constellation, lying at anchor in our ri
ver, in veering about, was suddenly thrown on a rocky
shoal, and heeled on her fide. In this fituntion she now
remains, her lee gunnels being below the furfice of the
-water. -During the exertions to right her this morning a
seaman falling with the main yard, which unexpectedly
gave way, had his leg and thigh fradtured.
It is expected that the frigate will be got off without
much damage to her hull. In effecting this her rigging
will neceffurily fuffer.
April 15. By the arrival of the brig Elisa from Gib
raltar we learn that the George Wafliington frigate, capt.
Bainbriclge, upon her arrival at Algiers from Constantin
ople, took on board the French confu! <it that place, and
landed him at Alicant. He was obliged to quit Algiers in
conftquence of the dey having declared war againtt France,
at the instigation of the Ottoman Porte.
Peterfhurg , April 14. Upwards of 3000 barrels of
flour and 200 boglheads of tobacco arrived from the back
country through the canal, in the baton at Richmond, in
one day, the 6th instant.
A Spanifii frigate, with two millions-of dollars on board,
has been call away on the coast of Peru; 50 of the crew
were drowned, and the money lott.
Charleflon, April 21. Last evening, about half p .tt
7 o’clock, a fire broke out in the extensive livery foibles
of mr. Merrell, in Church ftrpct, whether by accident or
delign is not vet clearly afeertained. It burst forth fud
dtnly, and with such violence and fury as for a while to
bid defiance to the effoits of the citizens. Fortunately,
however, the wind being low, the pregrefs of the flame#
was confined to the back buildings adjacent to the Rubles,
the work fliop and kitchen of mr. Charles Watts, and a
dwclltnghoufe and (hop of mr. Casey. Me [TVs. Merrell
and Watts are {'offerers to a considerable amount.
We are liay.pv to date no lives were lott; several per
sons were very much hurt in pulling down fome old build
ings.
A great number of horses were in the ft able 3, but we
are informed tbev all got fairly out.
April 23. Yesterday arrived the ftiip Tclemachns,
Traliltin, Cork, 71 days; ftiip Hermit, Smith, Liverpool,

Yefteid.ty arrived the Hoop Four Confins, Goodbee, St.
Kitt’s. 1 2 davs.
Capt. Goodbee brings the important information of the
capture ot the Danifti islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas’s,
St. Bartholomew’*, and St. Martin’s, by the Englifit. Ad
miral Calder, who was supposed to have gone up the Me
diterranean in purfuit'of tiY French fleet under admiral
Gantheume, it appears had arrived on the Ration” with his •
squadron, and alfittcd in the expedition. A force was also
toileting, laid to be destined againtt St. Kuftatia. Re
ports prevailed at St. Kitt’s, that three French line of
battle Ihips, with troops on board, had arrived at Guada
loupe from Prince; and fears were entertained that an at
tack on the Englilh islands was contemplated, which would
probably become an eaiv conqneft, having been flapped
ot dll their military forces to aid in the capture of the Dan
lh islands.
The- Ganges was the only United States velfel at St.
Kitts. Ihe depredations on American veifels by the-pri
vateers from Guadaloupe had entirely ceased.
Capt. Goodbee brought Bafieterrc pa[>ers to the 7th inst.
nom which the tollowing particulars are extracted:

their escape. The fleet failed from the iiland on Monday
last for the purpose of fumnioning St. Croix to funrender;
among them are said to be the following men of vriar, men
tioned in our last to have just arrived from Europe:
Prevo?oTWales, 98; La Jutte, 84; Le Pompee, 80;
CourHgkux„ 74; Spencer, 74; Cumberland, fsy; and the
T hames frigate, under the command of rear admiral fir
Robert Calder, bart. < t
It is with much pleasure tfc announce, in addition to
our recent valuable conquests, the capture of the Daniih
illarids of St. Thomas and St. Croix; the former was fiiit
attacked, and surrendered without reiiftance; the capture
of the latter was accoinplillied by our forces without any
loss, the iiland having surrendered after the difcharge’ of
one F>und of cannon, and receiving in return the fire of
the English troops. A gentleman who arrived here last
night from St. Martin’s informs us that an express boat,,
bound to windward with dispatches, had arrived there on
Sunday last, and brought a confirmation of the above in
telligence..
By the capture of these islands the trade of the Danes
and Swedes in the Weft Indies is totally annihilated, and
the iupplies of the French at Guadaloupe rendered very
jH'car/ons.
‘ £P r, l 2 5* Yesterday arrived the brig Fertenandus,
Bourdeaux, 105 days.
t** Hunter, of the brig Friendfliip, who arrived
yeft/fov, was at St. Thotnas’s when that place was taken
by tj( British. Being in the offing, he was by’ signal or
dereain, but took advantage of a heavv squall to effect his
efcapt and ran down the feuth fide of Porto Rico.
Whi’ passing through the Mona Passage he was brought
to by a French frigate, treated politely, and without de
tentjn permitted to proceed. At the fame time difeo
vered7 French fail of the line, fome of which were of 90
guns. They appeared to stand for Jamaica.
April 27. Yesterday arrived the (hip Aurora, Barg
horn, leer, 96 clays.
