SALEM , july 20.
and Friday were proud days to Salem
JL and Beverly; the treasures of the Ead flowed into
the laps of our merchants; joy fat on the countenance of
every one; there was no alloy mixed with the sweets of
India, no bitterness in the cup of fortune’s rich gifts; on
these two days we had the pleasure to witness the arrival
of four valuable vedeis from the Ead Indies, viz. the fliip
Cyrus, rapt. Leach, from Calcutta; the Laurel, capt.
Sage, fom Manilla; the barque Eliza, capt. Lander,
from Calcutta; and the brig Rajah, capt. Carnes, from
Sumatra. These vdTels have si! returned home with valu
able cargoes, and are estimated to be wortli upwards of
joo,ooo dollars, the United States duty upon which mud
amount to Go or 70,000 dollars. “VVe underfland that
the crews of the four vcfiels are all in good licalth, and
that not a man had died on tile voyage;
It appears by the different accounts by the F.ad India
(l ips arrived in this town that a grand expedition had
teen-fitted out from Bengal; there were near too fail of
large (hips carrying troops, horses, &c. convoyed by fe
vcral fiiips of war under the command of admiral Rainier.
After the fleet failed, which was about the id of March,
from Ceylon, where it had rendezvoused, fevcral small
d-visions of fiiips departed from the Ganges to join. The
feet toe k in a large quantity of water. There are various
c.i’v vAitions as to the force of this expedition; fome efti
ir.atc it at i/p,coo men, others as far as 1 5.000; tliere
were two European regiments, the remainder is composed
off-'poy troops fdefted from their bed corps. Several re
gi meats are said to.have been sent from the Capo of Good,
liotw to aft in concert. There can be no doubt that this
t;>< lit if -n is defined againd the French in Egypt, by the
way of the lied Sea and Persian Gylph, although the ob
j Yt was kept a profound fee ret in the Ead Indies.
P>ojion, July .9. Arrived, brig Windier, transport,

V London , June 17.
Died, on Sunday morning, at his house in Gloucefter
place, brig. gen. Arnold.
A fliort article from Brudels contains the following pa
ragraph: u j he negotiations for a peace between England
and France are greatly promoted by count Cobeim I, at
Paris. Several points will now fie conceded by France
which would not have beep yielded before the late change
of government in Ruflia.
At the council held yeflerday the embargo on the Swtd
ifli fiiips was taken oil. Count Bernfturff was introduced
to liis majedy.
June 18.
Yeflerday government received difpatchcs from lord El
gin at Conflantinopie, containing letters from lord Keith, ’
dated toe 3d of lad month. Up to that period no aflair
of importance had taken place between the armies; but ac
counts from admiral Blanket had reached his lordjhip, who
continued with Lis fquadren in Aboukir bay, announting
the arrival at Suez of the expedition with the reinforcements
from Bengal and Bombay. This acceflion of strength will,
by diverting the attention and dividing the forces of the e r
nemy, powerfully tend to the litccds of gen. Hutchinson’s
operations.
