K,e plea of the perilous state of the colony.
I Though the system formed Is not a republican system It
Irav faidy be considered as the parent of one; it tends, as
I ht as it goes, to advance the general interests, by protest-
I ing the persons, the properties, and consciences of men,
■ jrom wanton invasion. In short it eftabliflies a system of
I laws and felf government.
I How far the experiment may succeed time only can de-
I flo'nftrate; at any rate it is calculated to engage a large
I portion of our solicitude and reflection.

„ [From Peter Pindar.]
jTU AS at some country place, a parson preaching,
1 be virtue of long sufferance was teaching;
And so emphatically did exhort
His list’ning congregation, and in short
Discours’d so much of Job, and how he here
AVith such exceeding pleasantn his voes,
Faith ’twas enough to make a man suppose
job wished for more*
Meaning, perhaps, that since his plain
How needlessly we grieve at p.fi:,
. f low would it be if Man
Pursued a different plan,
And were to laugh and tiv,it the matter lightly*
And not, when tortured with the gout,
To make wrv faces, roar and six- t,
But look agrefttble and sprightly.
“ And pray, d’ye think, my dearest life,”’
Exclaim'd the parson’s wife,
As after-church they sat,
In courteous chat,
“ That his in human nature to endure
“ That sail extremity of woe,
“ That Job", you say, did undergo?
“ ’Tis more than you or I could do, I’m sure.’*
“ My dear, (quoth he) this diffidence
“ Shews,- let me tell you, great good sense;
“ A talent in your sex we seldom see;
“ And doubt Ess the remark is true,
“ As far ;, .s it extends to you,
“ Though not, 1 think, to me.
“ No Woman, since the world bf-gsu,
“ Gould bear misfortune like a Man—
u And in good truth, ftwixt you andme,
“ And that without much vanity,
“ I do conceive that I myself have shewn
“ Tlmt patience, and tint strength of mind,
“ Were not-entirely confin’d
“ To Job alone.”
Thus said the modest priest, and would have said much
more,
But for the sudden opening of the door;
When, out of breath, in stumps
His clownish servant, “ Numps,”
V. itli mouth wide ojx'n, on the parson gazing
just like the Wight
VV ho drew old Priam’s curtains in the night.
To tell him Troy was blazing.
“ Well, Numps, the matter? speak! why look’st so pale,
“ Has any thing gone wrong?” Quoth’ Numps, “ The
Ale.”
“ What!” cries the priest, “ the Ale gone sour?”
(And then his phiz began to lower)
“ 1 urn’d sour! No, Measter, no,” replied the fellow;
“ But just now, as I went, d’ye see,
“ To tilt the cask—away roll’d lie,
“ And all the liquor’s spilt about the cellar!”
The fact was—Numps a cask of Ale had stav'd;
Now, prithee, tell me how the pries: behav'd:
Did lie pull off his wig, or tear his hair?
Or, like that silly fellow Job,
Throw ashes on his head, “or rend his robe?
Say, hobv did lie this dire misfortune bear?
As thus, in voice of pious resignation,
Fie to his man address’d this mild oration:
“ May God confound thee, thou damn’d stupid bear!
(I lie best ot priests, you know, will sometimes swear)
“ What! you must meddle, must you,
“ With the barrel, and be curst t’ve!
“ J wish thy paws were in the fire—Odd rot ’em
“ Get thee down stairs this instant, wretch,
“ Or, by the living G—d, I’ll kick thy breech
“ From top to bottom.”
kt Nav now, my dearest,” cried the dame,
“ Is this your patience?— l’ie for shame!
“ I beg you li recollect your text;
“ Job was not half so vext
“ When he’d bis sons and daughters to bewail.”
*’ D—n- all his sons and daughters, if you choose*
u Answer me this, I say—-Did Job ever lose
“ A barrel of such Alt?”
