ALB I'TER from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to an
officer in this garrison, me uioiis, that a person in
a dreadful fit of insanity, having poflefled himfelf of a hat
chet, went to the house of a poor woman, in which were
three children, and split their sculls in a molt (hocking
manner. The mother hearing the cries Os her children ran
to their assistance, and lhared the fame fate. This un*
happy wretch was at length disarmed by col. Hatton, but
not before he had dangerously wounded nine perlbns, fix
of which were dead when the veltel in which the letter
came left St. John’s, t ‘
Bojion, September 29. On Saturdav, about i t

In the night, about t o’clock, the French corvette Ber

Yefierday afternoon the Pheasant returned, and anchor
ed in Nantafket road, in apparent good order. She was
not in fight in the morning, and came up the bay from
the e. s. e. which courle there is no doubt the Berceau
purfned. It is probable the latter veflel was thebeft sailer,
and thereby avoided an action.

Since our advices of the 17th info, the weather has con

almost universal; in the southern counties the new crons
are already got up; in other parts of the kingdom they
are hoiiling with much indullry. and all accounts agree in
reprefeliving them to be very luxuriant, and the foafon
one of the find! ever remembered. Under these circum

great aiul rapid depreciation, and the market Items now
to have become confirmedly dull, for although there ap

The long expected fuppli -a of rice from the Eafo Indies

limits.
It is yet impracticable to afceitain what may be the real
extent of this y ear’s crops, or how far they may prove
