Philadelphia , January 16. Yesterday morning, at
5 o’clock, a fire broke out in the house occupied as a dwel
ling and a {lore by mr. Richard Wevil, upholsterer, situ
ated in Cheliiut, near Sixtli street. The flames, which it
is believed originated in the cellar, had entirely consumed
the lower part of the building before it was difeovered by
the family, who, with great difficulty and equal peril,
escaped froirt the roof of the house. By the time the ci
tizens had collected it was in vain to attempt the pre leg
ation of the house, or any of the property it contained;
they bo'th were wholly consumed. The spacious and ele
gant house occupied and owned by mr. S. Duponceau,
from its contiguity to the flames, was in imminent dan
ger; it was fortunately preserved, with but flight damage
to the roof, by the activity and (kill of the fin men. The
dwelling of mr. Girvin, taylor, which was adjoining, sus
tained considerable injury.
Several circumstances concur to render it more than
probable that this calamity was occasioned by fome mali
cious or evil dilpoled person. We trust that llrenuous
efforts will be made to detedl the incendiary.
