The- PARTRIDGES: A Moral Tale.
Addressed by a Father to bis Daughters*
IN JEsop’s days, when Time was young,
Both birds and beasts could use their tongue;
Nay, reptiles would express a joke,
And even vegetables spoke: ... , •* > *
Like children of one common mother,
All talk’d, and understood each other.
But though this universal lore
Os ancient times exists no more,
Yet still a language is possest
By every bird and every beast, _ . - *
Which to its kind is understood;
Which serves them to instrurt their brood: -
For, furr’d or feather’d, past conjecture,
Parents possess the power to lerture.
Daughters, admit this dortrine true; /
Then read my Tale, address’d to you.
Now January, an hoary seer,
Hau introduc’d the infant year; ,
And treading onward in his track,
With grizly winter on his back; .
His tardy journey nearly done,
Was hast’ning to avoid the sun.
And February, with looks more bland,
And mien less fierce, was close at hand;
The early harbinger of spring,
Who first invites the lark to sing,
Who spreads the influence of the sun,
And stops the partridge-killing gun.
By nature freed, the Partridge flies,
Loosen’d the band that instind ties;
Dissolv’d the anxious mother's charge,
And all the brood dismist at large.
Yet one, a parent fond as rare,
Protradls her kind maternal care,
And still her family restrains
From rashly roving o’er the plains,
By observations wise;—but they
Repine, and censure the delay.
Within the covert of a wood
The Partridge thus addrest her brood:
u Children, to all my words attend,
And know your parent for your friend.
What Nature gives you now have got;
But wisdom is not yet your lot:
Experience only this can teach:—
And Age is privileg’d to preach.
Nine winters have these eyes beheld
The various dangers of tht field.
Each'season its disasters brought;
And all I know is dearly bought.
Your instinCt can foretel the storm,
It knows the hawk's tremendous form;
But insufficient is to shun
The dog, prelusive to the gun; j,
Alas! unequal far to scan
The various murdering arts of Man.
From such a fate to warn you well,
Hear how your gallant father fell.
’Twas when your wings could hardly bear •
Their trembling burden through the air,
That, fond your tender forms to shield,
We nestled in a barley-field.
The scent a treach’rous Pointer drew—
I call’d my y oung, and off I flew.
Your sire remain'd, and roading large
l o lead him from his sacred charge—
Too self-negleCtfut thus to run!—
He fell, a victim to the gun.
These dangers for a season last; v
Their period now is nearly past. ... . ~ •
With joy I hail the happy date,
When Man is over-ruPd by Fate; -
When all his hostile measures end;
When from our foe he turns our friend. j.
You marvel—but my words are just;
Believe their truth, their purpose trust,
So to a certain point, we know,
The mighty Ocean’s doom’d to flow;
When back by Fate repress’d again
Its refluent billows seek the main.
And so the Moon, that rules the night,
At stated times is dark and light.
’Tis thus with Man: beyond to-morrow
lie joys no longer at our sorrow;
A kindlier influence rules his nature,
That quite transforms the hideous creature.
Till then your mother’s call attend;
For then her anxious cares will end.”
To-morrow came:—the sky was grey:
Before the sun the clouds gave way:
All radiant in the east he rose;
Warbles the lark, the zephir blows.
The youthful Partridges awoke;
And Folly smil’d while thus they spoke.
“ Although the covey-time be past,
Our mother likes to make it last.
Envy perhaps her mind devours
Her plumage not so bright as ours!
To hold us in this infant station; “
Defrauding us of admiration.
T he morn now shines, and noon-day warms,
And all our neighbors meet in swarms.
Yet still it is her constant plan
To fright us with that bugbear Man.
We all have seen him near yon cottage
It must be art—or else ’tis dotage!
And let him, let this monster brave us,
Our instinCt and our wings will save us.’*
Not long their purpose was suspended;
Abrupt the conversation ended:
They spread their pinions to the light,
And—whirr!—ut once uprose in flight.
Rous’d by the sound the mother starts—
Away the rapid flock departs.
She eyes their progress through the air;
And vents bar pangs in fruitless prayer*
This day, the last of shooting time,
Invites two Youths to load and prime;
Skill’d in the art, and keenly beiTt
On dire success, away they went.
As each his double-barrel bore,
Their careful pointers range‘before; .
This way and that,-athwart aud-wide,
Forward ‘and hack;. fVdifi side to side;
Their busy tails their hopes declare;
With open nose they snuff the air.
The freshening breeze conveys the Stent, _
And leads them where the Covey went.
Mark with what eagerness they go,
What ardor, yet what caution, shew:
See, now, they draw on either hand, . l
And stiffening into statues —standi
The Youths approach—the Covey springs—<’ • *
Vain now their instinrt and their wings!—
Two never ‘heard the fatal sound,
But.beat with instant death the ground.
The three remaining onward flew:—
Again, the Youths their triggers drew:
Again they took their aim too well—
- Two fell, and flutter’d as they fell. ,
The third and last, though wounded, flies,
With strength which coming death supplies,
Back to the covert, to implore
That aid her dam can give no more.
• Short-breathing at her side she stood:
The grass was sullied with her blood.
Vainly her error she repents,
Vainly her sisters fate laments:
~... The mothers heart is pierc’d with grief;
But all unfit to yield relief.
Thiß only hastening Death supplies;
And, see, It comes, —-for, lo! she dies.
The Mother says, in broken sighs,
Would but your deaths make others wise—
Yoqr fatal disobedience prove
The support to parental love—
, More firmly fix the filial chain—
My Children hpve not died in*vaijw •

LONDON, December 4.
IT appears that ivlcncu and all the troops from Egypt
have now arrived in France. We should imagine that
the fcaqie of the French disasters in Jigypt will form the
fubjert of inquiry. The late manifefto of the French go
vernment imputed the loss of that country to disunion and
want of concert among the army there.
December 7. Franquillity is now restored in the repub
lic of the Seven United Islands.
As loon as the Engliffi corvette and four Turkilh (hips’
of the line appeared before Zante the disturbance ceased.
I he inhabitants had refufed to acknowledge the authority
of the lenate of Corfu, and had been persuaded by two
adventurers, Macry and Calendoe, to put themselves un
der the protertion of the British and hoist the English flag;
on the arrival of the (hips of war the flag was struck, and
that of the republic of the Seven United Illands hoisted in
its (lead, which was saluted in token of acknowledgment
by several difeharges from the corvette and the Turkilh
(hips. The two adventurers have fled.
December 8. Viscount Nelson had a long interview
yesterday with the lords of the admiralty previoully to
his lord (hip’s taking the command of a fleet destined for
foreign service.
M. Otto is appointed minister plenipotentiary of the
French republic to our court. His credentials were trans
mitted to him on Sunday.
December 10. The utmost possible artivity prevails at
Boijrdeaux among the merchants. An immense number
ot (hips are on the eve of failing thence, mr-ftly bound to
Guadaloupe and the Mauritius. Peace will give new en
ergy to the speculation of that trading city.
December 14. Mails from France will now be regu
larly interchanged, in consequence of the royal assent given
to the foreign correspondence bill.
December 15. Last night an interesting debate took
place on the fubjert of the opening of the malt distilleries,
when the question was decided in favor of their being al
lowed to be resumed.
An order was (igned in council by his majesty on Sa
turday, to allow the importation for fix months, duty
free, of all kinds ot beans, tares, and other pulse; a* alio
cattle, (beep, swine; meat of all kinds, faked or frefh;
