NASSAU, {New Providence) February 5.
THE tloop Amazonian, George Watts matter, arrived
here yetterday, after having been on (bore on the
Elbow Reef, where (he received so much damage as to be
•bliged to come into this port. She was bound from Phi
ladelphia to Havana, with a cargo of flour and other ar
ticles.
February 10. We are sorry to announce the loss of
the (hip Ranger, William Lea matter, from London,
bound to this port. She was call away on Savannah
Sound, Eleuthera, on Sunday last, at 9 ?. m. The crew
are saved, and part of the cargo, but the vessel totally loft.
February 13. Capt. Chace, of the American schooner
Mary, from Tobago, bound to Charleston, call away on
the Martyr’s Reef, arrived here on Tuesday last in the
schooner Venus, Dalton.
February 17. The American schooner Oaks, capt.
Nipkins, from Charleston, bound to the Havana, has
been loft on Martyr’s Reef; the crew and part of the cargo
saved and brought up by the schooner Adventure, Young,
belonging to this port.
February 19. On Wednesday last was tried in the
general court of these islands, by a special jury, anadion
for a libel, between William Wylly, efq. his majesty’s
attorney and advocate, plaintiff, and Joseph Hunter,
Edward Shearman, and George Johpfon, defendants.
The trial lasted several hours. Verdict for plaintiff—
Damages 1 0001.
The (hip General Oglethorpe of Savannah, William
Patterson matter, of 530 tons burthen, owned by 7 meffrs.
Mein and Mackay, was totally loft, on the night of the
15th instant, on the reef N. e. of Whale Key, and 23 per
sons perished; among whom was nir. Joshua Frazer, of
Charleston, 2d mate of the (hip, a young man who will be
moft sincerely lamented by many respectable friends and
relations. Capt. Patterson, mr. Robert Mackay, of Sa
vannah, mr. James Broadfoot, of Charleston, and 1 2 oth
ers, were saved, by taking to the boat before the ftiip went
to pieces, and after being 11 days exposed to every hard ftiip
were taken up by the schooner Ranger of Charleston, on
Tuesday last, about 20 miles to the westward of the Hole
in the Wall. Capt. Patterson, mr. Broadfoot, and mr.
Mackay, have requested us to mention the obligations they
are under to capt- Bennett of the Ranger, for the very
hospitable manner in which he received them on board his
vessel, and for the great attention and civility they expe
rienced while with him. They arrived here on Wednesday
evening.
BOSTON, January 29.
ON Wednesday night an incendiary attempt was made
on a building on the southern fide of Fort Hill.
On the 12th instant the store of mr. Abel Harvev, at
Brookfield, was destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated
at 1200 dollars.
The house of mr. David Rowland, in Harrilburgh,
(Pennsylvania) was contained in the night of the 1 oth in
stant. The ladies formed in the lanes to pals the buckets
with water to the engines.
011 Thursday the 21st infant, as mr. SaKbury Jackson
was at work in his rope walk, in Water street, near the
drawbridge, Plymouth, his tar kettle boiled over, and the
whole building was instantly wrapped in flames; but by
unprecedented exertion it was got under, with the loss of
the ropewalk and flock, amounting to about 6000 dollars,
with fome damage done to several vessels and stores, but
no other building was entirely consumed.
On the 22d instant the temporary lighthouse on the
Gurnet was nearly destroyed by fire.
From Northampton we learn, that on Friday the 22d
instant the schoolhouse at Norwich took fire and was con
sumed to alhes. The fire caught from a broom which had
been used a few minutes before the fchool was difmiffcd to
fweepthe hearth, and which was set away with fire in it.
A caution against the praiftice of (weeping schoolhouses at
night.
Providence, January 30. A few days since the large
and extensive manufactory for firearms, belonging to mr.
Eliftia Brown, of Foster, was unfortunately consumed by
fire. A parcel of unfinifhed arms were in one of the
buildings. Mr. Brown has heretofore, by contract, fur
niihed large quantities of excellent arms for the United
States.
Wednesday morning last, about 2 o’clock, the house of
mr. Aaron Bourn, innholder, at Bristol, was consumed by
fire, with nearly all the furniture. Some of the family
narrowly escaped with their lives.
New Fork, February 9. By the arrival of the (hip
Benjamin Franklin from Bourdeaux we have received
Paris papers to the 9th December.
On the Bth December the minister of exterior relations
at Paris presented to the firft consul, mr. Livingston, the
envoy extraordinary of the United States of America to
the French republic ; alio mr. Smith, late American mini
ster at the court of Li (bon.
ft he papers mention that gen. MafiVna was nominated
ambassador to Constantinople, and that he would immedi
ately depart for his place of destination.
Extract of a letter from a refpeSlable commercial house
at Havre , dated December 10, 1801.
“ K is with pleasure we inform you that the inter
course between France and Louisiana is on the point of
becoming very frequent, by the exchange which is about
to be (if not already) made between the French and Spa
m(h governments. The Spanifli part of St. Domingo,
ceded by the treaty of peace to France, is to be restored
to Spain, in lieu of Louisiana, which is to he put in pos
e ion of the French. Vessels are already preparing to
fail for New Orleans.”

which was an Englilh veil'd with 11 leamen, all of whom,
with the cargo, went to the bottom.

February 11. \ efterday morning the body of Robert
Thompson was found at the toot of Murray street, near tire
door of the public house kept by Michael Lowerre. On ex
amination it was difco\died that his left thigh was broke, and
t!ie body othei wi(e bruilcd* 1 here is 110 doubt oi Ins having
been murdered.
On Tuesday evening, about half pad ten, a man was
(topped by a footpad near the (hip yards, who demanded his
watch and money; it was re titled; a threat was then made to
blow out his brains in cale oi non-compliance. Aoiftol was
drawn, and immediately feizecl by the ge tleman, who, in
the feuffle which ensued, proved too much for the footpad.
A whittle fiom this fellow brought two oi his accomplices to
his aftiftancc, when the gentleman hollowed murder! mur
der! This brought up two watchmen, who pursued, and,
we are informed, took two of the villains.

He that hath ears to bear let him bear, and let us

On the 3d day of O&ober last the wife of mr. Rufus
Herrick of Norwich, in the county of Chenango, having
given a cow fome fait, stood In an heedless manner by her
until die had eaten it up, when the cow, with an antic
motion ol ‘her head, wounded mrs. Herrick with one of her
horns, so that (lie let out her bowels, which mrs. Herrick
held up with her hands until (lie got into the house and
laid herfelf on tlie bed, where, notwithstanding all human
efforts ior her recovery, (lie expired five days after, in the
13d year of her age. She left an affe&ionafo huflnnd
and nve children to mourn their loss: But alas! not long
did they mourn before three ot the children were called to
follow tneir deceased parent. On Saturday last (December
12th) mr. Herrick went to labor on the (ice of the river
oppotite to his house, and set out to return to his family in
the beginning of the evening, but someone had removed
the canoe, 10 that he could not conveniently cross the ri
ver that nignt; therefore tie concluded to tarry from his
family until morning; but he was alarmed about to o’clock
in the evening by the light of his house in flames, when
he made all poftible haste to get to it, but before he or any
other one could get to the place his hmde, three of his
children, (two daughters, one in her 1 ith year, the other
in her 9th, and a son in his sth year) with all his heufe
hold furniture and effucL, were consumed. Two funs,
Abel and George, the eldest and youngest, one near 1 3,
and the other about 2, escaped the ila-n. It is supposed
that the eldest carried his brother out of the house, but he
cannot remember any thing about it. Abel, with the
marks of fire upon him, ran about 50 rods to the nearest
house, but it was too late to obtain relief, for the house
had fallen, and the children were dead. A funeral lb mi on
was preached the Monday following, and what little re
mains of the children could be gathered were interred by
the fide of the deceased mother.
February 9. The respectable merchants of this city
have prepared a memorial to congress against the patting
of the bill now before that body fora repeal of the judici
arv aft.

informed that a flag ftaff, with a white flag, is hoisted at
Gape May as food as a vessel is difcovereu. All matters
oi vessels may Ire allured oi a pilot, or receiving informa
tion by boats that are kept for that purpoie by the pilots
of Cape May.

A mojl faring highway robbery and murder.
A country waggon, in which there were two men from
Chester county, on their way home fronytfjfcrket, was (hop
ped early last night, between the Centre Square engine
house and the Middle Fc-ry, by three footpads, armed with
pistols, and dressed in dark blue round about jackets or
fpencers. When the waggon (lopped they told the coun
trymen that they must instantly deliver their money, or
they would blow their brains out. While they were re
ceiving from the person who fat in the back part of the
waggon the little money he had about him, (amounting to
four (hillings) the one who held the reins, and fat on the
front feat, expostulated with them to delift, as they were
poor men. One of the robbers ordered him, on pain of
death, to cease speaking; and, horrid to relate, thole words
were scarcely uttered before one of bis bloody companions
fired; the ball it is said penetrated his heart; he fell for
ward between the horses, and instantly expired! On which
the villains fled. We regret that we have it not in our
power to give an accurate defcriptlon of the persons and
dresses of thole atrocious murderers.
The deceased was a man of good character, and has left
a wife and three children to deplore their loss.
Baltimore, February 13. On Monday a body of an
infant was found buried in a candle box, near the furface
of the ground, ft’lie box was marked 1. S. A coroner’s
inquest was called, which brought in a verdift of wilful
murder, but the unnatural perpetrator has not yet been
difeovered.
Yesterday a laughable piece of villany was difeovered
in this city. A person lodging at the house of mr. Joliah
Stephenson, near Market street bridge, made fide to him
of a likely well dressed mulatto boy, who was found to be
an aclivc and expeditious waiter: But on a sudden both
the servant and the feller dilappeared. Mr. Stephenson
pursued, and overtook them on board a packet, when, on
fome investigation, the adVive and smart boy was found to
be a girl, dressed in malculine attire, to aid the fwindiing
intention of her tnafter! Every generation grows wiser and
wiser, but this fact is certainly an improvement on the
wisdom of the present age.
IVaJhington, February 3. In several orchards near
New York a second growth of apples has appeared this
season. One of these apples measured four and an half
inches in circumference.

Ncwberh, February 13. On Saturday evening last,
about 8 o'clock, the town was alarmed by the cry of fire.
It was difeovered to issue from the house occupied by mr.
Cheek, which Was totally deftrovtd, with considerable part
ot his furniture. By the exertion of the citizens the house
where mrs. Howard relided was saved.
On the 30th ult. the iloop Victory, capt. T. Buckley,
from Guadaloupe to Wilmington, in this state, with rum,
sugar, and coffee, was cart away on New Inlet Bar; the
vessel soon went to pieces, moll of the car<*o was loft, and
every person on board perished, except the captain and mate.
Mr. Henrv Hofkins, supercargo, was amongst tlie loft.
CbarleJi'jp, March 1. Capt. Fuller left the Hav nu
on the 20th of February; on that day four Spanifli (hip*
of tlie line and three frigates, 011 c of which was French,
arrived off the Moro; one of the frigates had got into tlie
harbor. They were from St. Domingo. Letters received
by the frigate fluted, that tlie fleet which had arrived at
St. Domingo from France confided of 22 fail of the line
and 23 frigates, having on board 6c,000 men; that fort
I) mphiii having refried to receive troops from the fleet had
been demoliihed by sous fail of the line, which attacked
it; it was then taken pofleluon of, as was also the Cape,
where opposition was also made and much mifehief done
before it was evacuated.

of February.
u Yesterday the Spanilh frigate Sofidad arrived here
from St. Domingo; and to-day four Spanilh (hips of the
line, and one French frigate. The news brought by them
is, that Touffaint has burnt the Cape and fled to the moun
tains, leaving behind his military chert well filled. The
commander in chief has offered a large reward for his head,
and has issued a proclamation, that all those who do not
lay down their arms in three days will be hanged when
taken, without diftinclion; and also, that any vessel taken
in the act of supplying the inl’urgents with arms, ammuni
tion, or provisions, will be treated as pirates.”
