On the DEATH of a FRIEND.
By Mrs. W est.
IS there a duty unfulfil I’d?
Miranda calm inquir’d;
Whilst Admiration wept applause,
She worship’d, and expir’d.
I watch’d the fluttering pulse of life,
I felt it stop and cease;
Yet on her lips the parting soul
Diffus’d the smile of peace.
A pause ensued—a solemn pause,
A pause of pious awe;
The triumphs of a Christian faith,
And Christian faith, we saw.
Affiiftion in her big swoln eye
Restrain’d the rising tear;
And, while her soul return’d to God,
Was dumb with holy fear.
She saw, at least with mental ken,
Angelic forms attend;
They seem’d to wipe the dews of Deatn,
And soothe the tortur’d friend.
The entrance of tire world unseen
From mortal films they clear’d;
And, when the silver cord was loosd,
Their parting wings she heard.
Ye cold hard hearts, whose stubborn nerves
Compassion never prest;
Who ne’er with Love or Pity’s tear
The nobler feelings prest;
Do not the visions Hope supplies
To soothe Affliction scorn;
Well might Miranda’s mortal sense
Attradt the Sons of Morn.
The sufferer’s mind, compos’d, serene,
Nor doubt, nor dread, avow’d;
But (medicinal succor vain)
To Heaven submissive bow’d!
To Heaven the mother and the wife
Resign’d those powerful ties,
Which, in a heart less nobly firm,
Had bade reluCtance rise.
With feeble, yet with strict embrace,
She held each darling child;
Clasp’d in their dying parent’s arms,
Th’ unconscious infants smil’d.
Her parting charge, her kind adieu,
She breath'd in Virtue’s tone;
And, as she gave thqjdss of Death,
Suppress’d the rising groan.
’Tis done!—terrestrial duties close.
Enough hath Faith been tried;
She broke the sacramental bread,
Receiv’d the cup, and—died!
Ye cruel sceptics, who from man
His noblest hopes would tear;
Can ye the terminating scene
With such composure bear?
When every sinew sinks with pain,
And the pulse feebly beats,
And life’s warm current to the heart
From each cold limb retreats:
Annihilation’s chilling view
Can ye support unmov’d?
Or bid eternally farewel
To all in life belov’d?
i
Thou, bright Religion! canst alone
O’er Death’s assaults prevail;
Caught on thy radiant shield of faith,
I saw his arrows fail.
Sweet Cherub! thou o’er pallid Grief
Canst Comfort’s balm diffuse;
And, from the tomb wheie virtue sleeps,
To Heaven exalt our views.
Upheld by thee, Miranda clos’d
Serene her spotless life;
And the fond husband to his God
Resign’d his Angel-wife.
Religious Hope dispels the tears
By Grief to Memory given;
The love that virtue rear’d on earth
Is perfected in Heaven.

GENERAL ORDERS.
THE adjutant general will again proceed to the annual
convention of the field officers of the refpeftive re
giments and battalions, together with tbe brigade inlpeflors
of the brigades they refpeftively belong to, at such times,
and at such places, as may be mofl convenient for all th*
field officers of such brigades, in order to inflruft them ii
the difeipline preferibed by Congress, and in order that th*
evolutions preferibed by law may be praftifed. The briga
dier generals will order a company of light infantry or
fuiiliers to attend each refpeftive brigade convention of of

arifc in convening the field officers in each brigade, and
when, from various causes, the object of such convention
cannot be fully answered, the brigadier general of eack
brigade will, in lieu thereof, adopt such mode as he may
deem heft calculated for more effectually inftrmfting the
field officers in the difeipline preferibed. And the com
mander in chief is impressed with the opinion that the objeft
can be more generally effected in brigades, where it may
be found inconvenient to convene the field officers, by or
dering the field officers, or officer in each regimental or
battalion dillrict, to attend the adjutant general when th#
regimental or battalion officers are convened, for the pur
pole of being inflruftcd in the difeipline anu evolutions.

on the mofl proper time for convening the refpedlive regi
mental or battalion officers, with the adjutants and firft
ferjeants thereof, for the purpose of initrucling them in the
laid difeipline. And as it is of the greatest consequence
that the privates should be particularly taught the duty re- j
quired of them in the field, the commanding officers of the
refpeftive regiments and battalions are called on to aft in
concert with the adjutant general and brigade infpeftors,
by ordering regimental and battalion unifiers at such times
as they may be notified by the adjutant general that he will
attend them for the purpose.
The adjutant general is required, immediately after he
fiiall have completed hia annual tour for the purpose of in
fpeftion, to provide the commander in chief with a return
of the names of the field arid company officers throughout
