EXAMPLE.
Mr. Locke, in a letter written, the year before his
death, to one \..io aliCed linn, ki What is the fliorteft and
fu it ft way for a young gentleman, to attain to the true
knowledge of the Chriltian religion?” gives this memorable
reply: ‘ Let him flndy the holy- feriptures, tlpecially the
New 1 eftainent; tnerein are contained the words of eter
nal life; it has God for its author, falvaticn for its end,
and truth, without any mixture of error, tor its ‘matter.”
The death of this great man was agreeable to his life. A
bout two months before this event happened lie drew uo a
lettci to a certain gentleman, and left this direftion upon
L. 1o be delivered to him after my decease;” in which
are these remarkable words: “ I know you loved me liv
ing, and will preserve iny memory now lam dead. This
life is a feene of vanity, that loon paflev away, and affords
no lolid latisfadion but 111 the conicioui'nefs of doing we!!,
and in the hopes of another life. This is what I can fay
upon expei lence, and what you will fipd to be true when
you come to make up the account.”
Anecdotes of Louis XVI,
On an application made to him by Tippoo Saib, not
long before he iufiered, to allift him in taking poITUIion
of iome provinces in India from the Englilh, and annex
ing them to the crown of France, Louis nobly rtfuled his
ailent, and said, ‘ In the American war my ministers
took advantage of my youth and inexperience. Every
calamity that we have iufiered in France took its rife from
that event.’
During his infamous mock trial this prince was a/ked
what he had done with a certain firm of money a few
t.iouland pounds. His voice failed him, and the tears
came into his eyes, at this question; at last he replied,
‘ j’ffiunMS a f lire des beureux—l had a plealure in
making other people happy.’ He had given the money
away in charity.
On the night preceding his execution he said to M.
Edgeworth, k I do not know what I have done to my
couhn the duke of Orleans to induce him to behave to me
in the way m which he has done; but he is to be pitied;
he is still more wretched than I am; I would not change
lituations with him.*
A few hours before he died he said to the fame gentle
man, ‘ How happy I am to have retained my faith in re
ligion. 111 what a terrible state of mind Ihould I have
been at this moment had not the grace of God prefeived
this blefling to me. Yes, I fliall now be able to Ikew my
enemies that I do not fear them.’ 1
