The sentence of death heretofore pronounced on Eleanor
Bandy, now lying in Baltimore county gaol, has, by bis
excellency the governor of Maryland, at the request cf the
court of oyer and terminer and gaol delivery, been com
muted to labor for life at the workhouse of Baltimore
Augujl 26. From Niagara we learn, that the Seneca
Indians at Buffalo have complained of ill ulage from the
white settlers in that vicinity. A circumstance of an nn
nleafant nature recently occurred in a tavern in Buffalo:
Two white men, by the names of Olborne and Ward,
Feing an Indian pass, took the opportunity of infultiug
him: which enraging the Indian, lie stabbed them; they
both survived but a Ihorr titne. The Indian was seized by
a joint party of whites and Indians, and put into the cus
tody of the United States garrison for examination.
Washington, September 1. On Monday morning the
New York hauled off from the wharf, and dropped down
the eastern branch. This day (lie is to proceed hence and
min the Mediterranean fquadr'on. She will touch at
Hampton road to take in her beef and pork.
The John Adams, it is expected, will be equipped in
the fame time, viz. two weeks.

Norfolk, Augud 31. Yesterday came up to town the
pilot boat Nancy, belonging to capt. Wood, of Hamp
ton, who brought up the crew of the schooner Jupiter,
capt. Balding, which had funk on the middle ground on
Sunday. The circumstances, as related to ns, are as fol
low: On Sunday morning (being then five clays out from
Savannah, bound to New York) they di “covered the. ve.flkl
had lprung a leak; every exertion was made, not only to
flop it, but to clear her by pumping; they flood for the
Caoes of Virginia, and at 2 o’clock file went down, head
foremoft, on the middle ground. The pilot boat feeing
the Jupiter in distress flood for her, and was fortunate en
ough to take off all the crew but the captain, who as flie
went down leaped over her stern and swam for the pilot
beat, but before they could render him any assistance, ow
ing to the eddv made by her finking, he was unfortunately
drowned. A few of the peoples clothes were laved.
Peterjbiirg, September 3. Yesterday morning a duel
was fought near this town, between mr. Richard T hweatt
and mr. Edwin Fort, in confcquence of fome observations
published in our papers of Friday and Tuesday last, [Thele
observations related to the recent difinifTal of col. Heth
from the office of collector at Peterftnn’g by the prefiuent
of the United States.] At tk.e firft fire mr. Thweatt re
ceived a flight wound in his hand and shoulder; at the fe
cund fire mr. Thweatt fiiot mr. Fort through the body,
which in a few’ hours put a period to his existence.

pel was exhibiting bis occasional powers on Sunday fe’n

The Philadelphia t ßoard of Health report, Augnft 31,
five new calks of the fever, belides several taken fickin the
Northern Liberties, near Callowhill street, who have lately
returned to the city. The fever is again rather on the in
crease.
The cr.ftomhoufe in Philadelphia is fhutup, and the bu
siness of that office is tranfafted at the chamber formerly
occupied by the I'enate of the United States, during the
prevalence of the fever there.
r Fhe following melancholy accident happened in St. Pe
ter’s pari!li on the 28th Augull last: Mr. Charles Jaudon,
about 20 years of'age, foil of mr. Elias Jaudon, and his
brother, went into a corn fit-id to fiioot crows, when un
fortunately his gun went off accidentally, and the whole
load was'dife. barged in his body, which put an immediate
period to his Hie; hiS|brolher was about 20 yards distant
when the gun went off. A jury of iuqnelt was held on
tlie. body by jofeph Lawton, clip which brought in their
vtrdift accidental death. He was a young man of moft
excellent underftaiiJmg, and bid fair to be an ornament to
bis country; his loss js a levere stroke upon his aged parent
and relatives.

gentleman, after the peace in 1783, removed from East
Florida to this state; being fond of agriculture, he, with
great zeal and iiiduftry, puri'ued the culture of cotton,
and, being very fiiccefsful, was among!! the firft who ex
ported any large parcels from hence to England. It af
forded him.great fiitisfaftion that, under Providence, his
labors had proved instrumental to induce the general cul
tivation of so valuable a fliplc commodity in this state.
Mr. Levett was economical in his affairs, just, and correft
in his dealings, and has leic ail iiandiome competency to
his amiable family, now in England, who with his friends
w.ll regret his loss. His remains Were interred, by his
express directions, at Julian ton.

A weeks ago, A NEGRO FELLOW, named NERO;
he is a flout thick black Negro, of the Guinea country, a
bout 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, with filed teeth; it is fun
poled he is gone up tlie country. Ten dollars reward will
be paid on delivering him to the fubferiber, and five dollars
for lodging him in any gaol of the state.

ON the petition of Joseph Miller and Cochsan Mfffture,
administrators of John M‘Ca!l, surviving conartner
of M-Call and Burton, dating, that the said M‘Call and
Burton, in their lives, were poffcfled of a certain promis
sory note, signed by James James, bearing date the six
teen di oay of March, seventeen hundred and ninety-fix,
for the payment of three hundred and forty-feven dollars
fifty-fix and an half cents, together with an affidavit of the
said Joseph Miller, stating, that the said note has been
loft, or accidentally destroyed, and praying the benefit of
an aft of Aflembiy in fucli case made and provided, it is
ordered , Tnat the said note be eftafcliflied, agreeably to
the aft ol Assembly aforefaid, on the said Joseph Mille
and Cochran M‘Clure their publifliing a copy of this rule
for tiie ipace of fix months, in one of the public gazette
of this state, unless cause fliall be flievvn to the contrary
