The prisoners of Naples, as far as exquisite torture is concerned, do not exceed in honor the New York State prison at Sing Sing. A New York paper gives an account of the appli cation of the shower bath to Tom Kelly, a des p, rate villian, who recently led an attempt to escape from the institution. It says; It was no ordinary case. Half a dozen keep ers surrounded his cell when he came out of it, and followed him to the shower bath. Half a dozen men armed to the teeth, conducted him to the scene of his sufferings, where were wait ing half a dozen more to conquer him, should he make the slightest demonstration of resis tance. Kelly came into the room, pale and livid.— The lips were compressed, the eyes sunken ami half dosed, and the cheek bones projected mure prominently than in ordinary cases, from the compression of his jaws. "Take off your clothes, sir!” said the keep er. I'he mandat** was obeyed without a reply ; and he stripped himself naked, and entered the Lath. A convict who stood by fixed his feet in the -docks, his hand.-, in the armlets, and bis head under the bath. As soon as he was pla< e<l under it, he shook his head, as much as t«> >.tv, ” I’ve got to suffer.” The water was allowed to trickle down his face and warm his l>odv fora few minutes before the bath fell up on his hea<L At ’ength it fell. 'J oin bore it well, not a shiver of the legs, not a muscuhr movement of the hands or fingers, not a single crv of distress, although he was actually being drowned for about five minutes. You bear it well, Tom” said one of the k e|«*rs. after the first five minutes had elaps ed. and time had been given him to recuper ate. Il wa.- an awful spectacle to witness this man under the Lath. Every muscle contracted and b< • aim corded; sometims the hands would be come convulsed. and every nerve strained, when there would follow a relaxation. Then the wa tt r would cease to pour, and then would appear the sufferings of the culprit; the retching, and vomiting of water, which had swelled the hotly up like a dropsical invalid. Hanging is noth ing to the shower Imth. The man subjected to the bath for half an hour suffers ten times the amount of pain caused by strangulation, for the simple reason that just as conciousness is about leaving, and when he would be happy to die, he is brought back to a full realization of his sufferings and unhappy position . After Kelly had been showered, and taken to his <•. 'ii, the keeper turned around, and with a mai' .mint smile exclaimed, "We’ll subdue him.” tml-.ders, from thatsingle expressive sentence, mat guess at the rule in. Sing Sing. ‘•it - awful,” was Tom’s reply ; but I can’t a-k f<>r mercy.” Down came the water again, and for five min longer the gurgling sonnds of a strangula te! man were audible, and, when he was ex hauMed, the coni was let up and the water stop p'd. A few minutes of release was granted, and down came the water again, and the scene was more terrible than the worst execution we had ever witnessed. At length congestion of the brain was threatened, and a “ hiss” from tlie physician brought the third scene to a close Several minutes were allowed the unfortunate man to recover, but the punishment was tco terrible to witness to the end, and we left.— He ha<l been fifteen minutes under the shower but hail twenty five minutes of the same to en dure w hen we left : and for the next forty days the seme sort of punishment w ill be meted out t<> him, unless he dies under the hands of the keeper. Ax Important Decision under the Tariff. - A case was decided on Friday iu the United States Circuit Court of Pennsylvania, which puts several millions of dollars into importers’ pockets. A question arose as to the proper classification under the tariff of a species of - <>dx entered as “blankets,” but which the Gov ernment contended was not known as blankets when the tariff act was passed in 1846, the « h.dule <>f which was .adopted in the tariff of 1 he Court held that the goods were to be classed by the names they were known bv in I s and under this ruling the duty is only 15 instead of 24 per cent.
