Tur Axulo-Fkknch War in China.—The De
partment of State has received advices from
Mr. Ward, our Minister in China. He had left
Shanghai, in company with the Russian Am
bassador, and would proceed at once to the
Peiho, for the purpose of looking after the in
terests of their respective governments, and
also to aid, if possible, in bringing about an
adjustment of pending difficulties.
The powerful armament sent by England
and France against China reached safely its
destination, and the first blow- was probably
struck on the 25th of July, by an attack upon
the Takseu forts, both by land and water.—
The naval armament is immense—hundreds of
gunboats and a powerful fleet of war-steamers.
Besides these are batteries of Armstrong guns,
and also of the Napoleon rifle-cannon. ’I he al
lies are even supplied with squadrons of Brit
ish cavalry and French spah s and chasseurs.
It is the opinion of our naval officers that the
Taksen forts will be taken and destroyed, and
that no impediment will then exist to an at
tack on Pekin. The gunboats, transports, &c.,
will proceed up the Pei ho, and some point
which has been mentioned the troops are to
march on Pekin. But it is supposed that, after
the destruction of the forts, the Chinese will
negotiate, and agree to carry into effect the
treaty of Tien-tsin, and pay also the enormous
sum which the allies will demand as indemnity
for the cost of the war. But any treaty or any
submission would be so hostile to the sense of
he people, that the imperial government can
.ot carry one into effect.
From a Charleston Anti-Secessionist*
Toe Olumbus Enquirer publishes the fol
lowing letter from a Charleston tan :
“Ch irkstou is dull, very dull indeed. I be
lieve it is getting more, and more so every day,
and w hen the State secedes, as the people here
swear it w ill in the invent of Lincoln’s election
(and I think it is now certain that he will suc
ceed to the Presidency,) it will put the finish
ing blow to this place. Ihe port will be block
aded. men of capital of course will leave the city,
propettv will depreciate, and then we will see
some of the effects of such rashness; but it may
turn out that this is all talk. I hope so. They
seem here to think it certain that Alabama,
Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi will go with
them ; but they are extremely doubtful about
your State, Georgia, and w ell they may be, for
I take it that there is a good quantity of good
common .sense left in the old State of Georgia—
too much to adopt such a course until Lincoln
shall have given cause for such action. I had
hoped until the late election in Pennsylvania,
that the Opposition would have succeeded, that
peace and quiet would be restored to the coun
try, and that sectionalism, both North and South
would be killed off. Truly we are on strange
times.”
Gettwc the Best of a Landlord. —W hile
traveling through the mines of California, “way
up North,” —as the northern part of the State
is called—l stopped for a few days at one of
the hotels in a mountain village. \V hen about
to leave, I inquired of the landlord the size of
my bill. He replied :
"Let me see; five days at two fifty is twelve
fifty, and one meal at six bits is thirteen dol
lars and twenty-five cents altogether.”
“How much do you charge per week ?” i -
quired 1. “Tw<lve dollars n week,” was the
landlord's answer.
“And you ask thirteen dollars and two bits
for a little more than five days?” ii.tjrroga
ted I.
“Yes,” replied mine host; “for anything less
thun a week, we charge by' the day—except it
is less than a single day, when we are paid six
bits a meal and four bits for lodging.”
“And you charge your boarders twelve dol
lars a week ?” added 1.
“That is my price,’' he answered.
“Guess I’ll finish the week, then," responded
J—which, after paying the required amount, I
proceeded to do.
The landlord was for a moment nonplussed;
but he virtually acknowledged he was beat for
once.
A Temperance Character. —Before Judge
Stroud, some time ago, a deposition was read,
in which was involved the reputation for ebrie
ty of a citizen of another State. The desposi
tion was carefully written by a lawyer, and
gave explicit answers to the Commissioner be
fore whom he was taken. To the question
“Do s Blank drink liquor liabitunlly ?” the an
swer w. , “Only at camp meetings and similar
festive occasions.'’
The crop of wheat in this country the pres
ent year is estimated at one hundred and eighty
millions of bushels. Tnis is the largest ever
:tde. (.inly six of tlie States have a surplus
rop. and several of the States will require large
•upplies. The six Northwestern Stales which
have a surplus will, if they can enjoy three suc
cessive seasons as favorable as the last, be out
of debt, while, at the same time, their popula
tion will be greatly increased, and the value of
their arable lands more than doubled. The on
ly question is whether these lands will be under
the system of culture that is generally pursued.
Thf. She Wide Awakes and the Bowery
Boys.—A feature of the gnat Wide-Awake
demonstration in New York was a large car load
of fancy dressed young ladies. The W orld
says:
The ear. full of young ladies, sitting with light
dresses ami uncovered heads and necks, in the
red light of the torches, called forth affectionate
epithets from the Bowery boy's, and a musical
sound was heard of kisses thrown upon the air.
The crowd, however, was verv decorous.
Fair Wages.—At Raw Hide ranche, near
Jamestown, Tuolumne county, Cal., a Mr. W il
lis discoveied recently a quartz lead of fabulous
richness. He bought the claim for $'M), and
struck the lead after a few hours’ work. On
testing the quartz it proved nearly half gold. In
one week he took out |4C,OuO. He expected
to have between SBO,OOO and SIOO,OOO at the
expiration of three days.
Bob Toombs in Montgomery.—M e take pleas
ure in announcing to our readers that the Hon.
Robert Toombs, of Georgia, will certainly ad
dress the citizens of Montgomery on the 26th
of the present month—next Friday. Let there
be a general rally of the friends of Breckinridge
and Lane, and give to the distinguished Geor
gian and great orator such a reception and de
