MAC ON. OHORGIA: WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 31. THE DEFREES LETTER. /,’ .■ ' and the Union—Letter to J. L., Esq., Nushcille, Tenn. Dear Sir—A few days ago I received your h tter of the loth in reply to mine of the 3d .u-t. In your letter I find the following re ptarkabk* paragraph : To lay we had a despatch from Louisville which indicates that your prediction in regard to 1 Indiana election was correct. You may !><• < riect. too. when you say “ the election ol i i »’n i< a fixed factand, if it is, you may r< rd the immediate dissoution of the Union tt e«pia iy fixed. A general gloom is il,;-uwe>u roi;r whole community. This is not true. No such ini ntioa or desire exists. I tad <>f giving heed to the excited haran g -"i office-seekers at the hustings, would it nut I* tter comport with true statesmanship • ’ at t ’ne proposed measures of the repub- 1:< an party as announced in their “confessions of faith ?’ r 1' that, and it will be found that they siin i Iv propose, as announced at Chicago, as fol lows : Non-interference with slavery in the slave > but opposition to its extension into Territories now’ free. 2. To procure a more efficient law for the suppression of the slave trade. I he admission of Kansas under her pres ent constitution. • A revenue law, discriminating in favor of b••!«<. industry, for the support of the govern ment. > A reform in the abuses and a reduction in the expenditures of the general govern ment. *• \ liberal homestead law for actual set tlers Ou the public lands. 7. Ihe improvement of rivers and harbors of national interest. S I’he speedy construction, by aid of the . u • I government, <>f a railroad to the Pa cific. I: o to m? that no man in Tennessee can answer in the affirmative; and yet, that is all the republicans purjiose doing. ’ 1 one of them can at all be objectionable ’ > vm, and that ought not to be. Theexclusion . -i.u. ry from the Territories, during territo i d existence, by act of Congress, is opposed l<\ some of the people of the slave States, be- <■ iu<e, they say, such exclusion creates an in ep i ( yof States, and is, therefore, unjust. i ■ argument i- founded upon the assump tion ; property in slaves is of the samechar- > r a in any other kind of property. This republic in-regard as a fallacy, and the - .-i- of much of our present troubles. We hold that property in slave labor is of a i if ar character, and is not, therefore, proper s'. witnin the acknowledged meaning of the wo; las recognized by the civilized world. It is oif , property by reason of the local law • i r<•_-.da!.->n of the Slates where it exists, and i. .:-( !< of the jurisdiction of those States it is i t pi"p ity. Had it been otherwise, why the n< .-sity of that provision in the federal consti t . .in ngndt > fugitives from labor? Why ■ • - t >t the constitution contain a provision for the rendition of horses or cattle escaping from < i.e Stale into another ? For the reason that they are properly everywhere in Christendom, a 1 governed by the laws of property, univer . rccogniled. if horses or cattle go into t (i.nla tliey are reclaimed without difficulty.- V> ny i- it you cannot reclaim your slaves when they eseainto Canada ? It is because they an noti ignized as property by the common law. the -ages and customs which relate to property in it> universal, acknowledged sense. We ;y that the Territories are the common p- pel ty of ail the people, to be governed, while 1 :nb>ri< s, by the law making power of the i »le people, which is in Congress. W e he ir. eit to be bes; for the whole people that sla ve: y be excluded by act of Congress, it necessa r . while they remain in a territorial existence. W (i n, however, a Territory forms a State gov t' .Qieni, if the people thereof determine to have -civery and say so in their constitution, its ad n is- on will not be opposed for that reason, al though w e may regret the determination. Emigrants from ail sections to our Territo ins n<>w go there as equals—each taking with i. iu iu'l s .ch articles as ate regarded as proper ty i i iVery > ate in the Union. Were the chi - ■ : a -'ave Stale permitted to take their ,v s w ith them, it would be an unjust dis ■mtnition in favor ot the citizens ot that sec t. n <>f the Union, to the injury of the non - iv t . -.'iiiig Stales. Alabama, that “You cannot place your finger upon that Territory out of w inch we have the prospect of carving another slave State." Why ? Because all our Ti rritorie s are un.-uited to slave labor. If this l>e true <and who doubts it. i why is it that you threaten to dissolve the Union unless you are ; mi ted to do that which you do not want to ' Is not this the very climax of absurdity ? I- this the extent of your love for the Union ? Is tins y<>ur patriotism ? If it ’ • supposed that the republicans are to b • drivi i from their purposes by threats that Mr. Lincoln shall not be inaugurated, if elected. r.ui’ too to remind you that the race whence tu \ -pruiig must not be forgotten! They do not come of cow ards, to fawn and crouch at the fvet < f any power on earth! They are free men “and know their rights, and knowing, dare maintain them !" I hi- is n..t said in a spirit of bravado. Far from it *, but it is an announcement of a fact wniefa ought to be known, if it is not. If low. ver, the republicans believe that Mr. Lincoln would use the high position to which he is to be elevated lor the purpose of warring u •or the constitutional rights ot the South, he would not be elected. It is because they know him to be a man of enlarged, national and statesmanlike views, capable of grasping with all the great questions before the country, and so directing them as to do even and exact jus tice to all sections of the Union, that they con fide in him. YVe know that when Mr. Lincoln swears “to support the constitution and laws," that the oath will not be violated Among these laws are the Fugitive Slave law, the law against the slave trade and the law enacted to enable Gen. Jackson to put down nullification when the traitors of South Carolina threatened to resist the revenue laws. All these laws will be enforced. What more can you want ? What else ought to be requir ed? The man who set tire to the Temple of Ephe sus sought an immortality of infamy; audit would not be strange that, even at this day, some abased wretch, desiring the same fate, | may attempt the destruction ol the Union, our Temple of Liberty, erected by the toil and the blood of our fathers. He will not, however, be found among the hosts of republicans, whose every aspiration is for the preservation of that Temple, and whose blood, if necessary, will be poured out that it may stand forever. I yiTITII the facilities and long experience we possess V V in the Musical Business, we did not only select ■ the BEST I? I ANO S, as regards tone and durability, but have also effected the most advantageous terms to our customers for the supply of superior Instruments. We partly selected our Pianos and partly had them made to order. We are now receiving, without doubt, the best selection ever before brought to Macon, consisting of 6 1-2, 7, and 7 1-4 Octaves in plain an hlgdhly finished cases to suit every taste.— These Instruments we are prepared to sell either for Cash, on time, or monthly installments, at the lowest Factory prices. The latter arrangement, we think, will be accepted by many persons in want of first class Instruments, who are perhaps nor, willing to pay the entire amount at once, and to whom it will be easier to pay in monthly installments. Our object is to assist such persons in procuring a first class Piano, for whose superiority we will give a five year’s guarantee.— We intend to effect large sales, and are satisfied with small profits. and see our Stock to be convinced that we ought and really have such instruments as we repre sent them to be.
