Y. says: Twelve hundred kegs of powder 4 - d e ghty-four boxes of ammunition, were stepped to-day to Charleston, South Carolina’ DISTINGUISHED STRANGERS. Maj. Ben McColloch, whose name is famil iar to the people as the bold,intreprid, and gal lant officer in the wars with the Indians on our Western frontier, is at present in the pty. Also Gen. Pillow, of Tennessee.— Fed. Union. Letters received in Richmond, Va., state that the Knights of the Golden Circle are starving in Texas. They censure Gen. Bickley severe ly for misleading them on a wild goose chase. They are anxious to come home to the Old Do minion. Burned to Death.—A small child of Joseph S. Hernandez, of our city, caught on fire last Wednesday, and was so badly burned that it died a few hours afterwards.— Brunswick Advo cate, "Field and Fireside.’’—John R. Thompson, Esq , has retired from the editorial management of this popular weekly, and is succeeded by Mr. j James N. Ells, assisted by the Proprietor, Col. Janies Gardner. A Good One.—The Cleveland PUiindealer tells a good one on the Duke of Newcastle.— While stopping at the Burnet House he occu pied a room lettered “L.” and finding it locked one time on his return from a stroll through the ; city, he astonished the clerk in attendance by I i inquiring for "the key to hell.” PF* The Charleston Courier says : The Bank of Charleston has decided promptly to take one hundred thousai d dollars at par, of the bonds to be issued for the military exigency of the State.
