SATURDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 24.
.MEETING IN MACON COUNTY.
A Urge portion of the citTzens of the county
of Macon, irrespective of party, met inlhe Court
Hwuse, in Oglethorpe, on the 15th inst, whffn,
upon motion of E. W. Alien, Esq., Col. Wrr>.
H. Robinson was chosen President, Messrs. M.
J. McMullen and John W-Hunter, VicetPresi-
denls, and Dr. E. F. Colzey und John M. Greer,
Secretaries.
The object of the meeting was then explained
by the President in a speech of some length, in
which he reviewed the condition of the country,
and counseled a bold and united action upon the
part of the South. Samuel Hail moved the ap
pointment of a committee of 15 to report busi
ness for the meeting. The Chair appointed the
following: Messrs. S. Hall, David Wells, S.
Cheek, W. H. Willis, B. Harris, D. Worffhaw,
J. J. Carson, A. Neal, B. Green, R. Williafias,
Wm. Kaigler, W. H. Felton, W. W. Hill, John
Whichard and D. S. Butler.
The Rev. A. A. Robinson was appointed chap
lain, and the meeting was organized with pray
er. The committee made the following report
through their Chairman:
The election of Abraham Lincoln of Illinois
as President of the United States, and Hanni
bal Hamlin of Maine as Vice President, is the
final and complete triumph of the BUck Repub
lican party “which is the very Demon of nation
al discord, and is death to the Slave States, or
to the confederacy of all the States.” A party
which obtained its own compromise in the con-
stution, to continue the importation of slaves,
and now sets up a law higher than the consti
tution to abolish property in the slaves which
it sold to us its neighbors—which in 1819 and
1820 deprived us of equal settlements in more
than one half the territory acquired from
France—which seized upon Texas most of thir
ty six degrees thirty minutes—which also seiz
ed upon all the territory acquired by common
conquest from Mexico, and deprived slave la
bor of the priviiedge of operating in the weal
thiest mines of earth, the gold mines of Califor
nia—which hurried a slave state with 10.000.-
000 of common funds to sanction a prohibi
tion of slavery in all New Mexico—which
claims to abolish slavery in the district of Col
umbia—the Foris, Arsonal Dock Yards and
other places ceded to the United States, to abol
ish the entire state slave trade, and thus cut ofl
the Northern Slave States from their profits of
production, and the Southern from their sourc
es of supply of labor—to forbid all equality and
competition of settlement in the common terri
tories by the citizens of Slave States—which
repress all further admission of new slave states
—which has nullified the fugitive slave act in
fourteen states ol tha Union; has denied the ex
tradition of murderers, marauders, and felons
in several others—has caused and shielded the
murder of masters or owners in the pursuit
of fugitive slaves—has refused to prevent or
punish by state authority, the spoiliation of
<*
amounts to actual war
against them, and that his successful inaugura
tion will give the power and means to attain the
object in view—that although the said election
may be constitutional in form, its interest and
purpose is our invasion, and the overthrow of
the Constitution.
Resolved, That the said election of the said
Abraham Lincoln to the Presidency of the U.
S. upon the platform of principles upon which
he was nominated, assigns to the Southern
States an inferior position in the confederacy,
degrades them from their equality with the
Northern States in the privileges and benefits of
the Union, and calls loudly upon them to vindi
cate their rights, and maintain unimpaired the
Constitution as it was formed and transmitted
to them by their Fathers.
Resolved, That the contingency has hap
pened when Georgia stands pledged by the ac
tion of her Convention of 1850, to resist such
Federal aggressions, wrongs and outrages as
above set forth, “ even as a last resort to the
disruption of every tie that binds her to the
Resolved, That our Senator and Representa
tive in the General Assembly be requested, if
they cagpot “ repress” the conflict now raging
between the 6laveholding and non-slaveholding
-States of the cunft-deracy, to use all means at
their command to “ repel it,” and to take all
steps that can be lawfully and constitutionally
taken, to resuming the powers delegated by this
State to the general government; and to arm
ing the people in such manner as will enable
them to maintain their independence out of
the Union rather than longer submit to wrong
and degradation in it. •-*
tResolyed, That it i3 the sense of this meet
ing"-that the Legislature of this State now in
session, should call a Convention of the people
to judge of the infraction of pur rights and to
determine the mode and measure of redress,
and that as goed citizens we should feel hound
to acquiesce in the action of such- Convention.
Resolved, That when this meeting adjourn
it adjourn to Saturday next, 11 o’clock A, M.,
and that the citizens be invited to assemble at
that time for the purpose of forming an asso
ciation of “Minute Men,” to act in any emergen
cy for our safety and protection.
Resolved, That this Preamble and Resolu
tions be sent to the Georgia Telegraph for pub
lication, and that all the papers in the Second
Congressional District, and in the cities of Ma
con and Milledgeville be requested to copy the
same, and that a copy be sent to our Senator I
and Representative in the Legislature with a
request that they be laid before the general as
sembly.
All of which were unanimously adopted.—
After which Col. W. A. Hawkins addressed the
meeting in an eloquent speech, urging upon
them 'immediate resistance and resistance to
the death. Col. Sullivan, Adam Robinson and
Col. S. Hall also addressed the meeting in fa
vor of immediate secession. The meeting then
adjourned to Saturday 11 o’clock A. M.
The meeting met according to adjournment,
11 o’clock Saturday, when 70 names were re
corded as Minute Men, who declared themselves
ready and willing to give their services to the
State of Georgia or any other Southern State
which may resist the abolition reign of Lincoln
by secession or otherwise.
