MOVEMENTS ABOUT YTASniXGTON.
The Northern papers contain a variety of in
teresting intelligence in relation, to tnilitary af
fairs around and about Washington. We give
below as much as our space will permit The
Washington correspondent of the Baltimore
Exchange writes:
There Is still great excitement, uneasiness
and apprehcp&ion in this city, thouttl^M'pa-
rently decreasing in fervor. Many of tlflRops
who fled in dismay to the woods are imom-
ing in like frightened sheep returning to the
fold. They are scattered about the city—the
more desperate ones marauding upon the citi
zens, SpuTscs_andpTOVcnder for tlielr daily sus
tenance. I do not doairo to Intimate that high
way robberies are frequent, but that the sol
diers who are without money ask in such a
peremptory manner that jt js almost impossi
ble to deny their requests without being in
most instances insulted; to place- the matter in
the mildest possible form.
Every effort is made to conceal the extent of
the disaster on Shnday.' Chins Have been
mounted and given to arrtillery congp^pies, and
the public informed that they have been recov
ered Irom the battlefield, fne enemyVot hav
ing followed sufficiently far to capture them
They do not seem to reflect that, if this be true
that it only adds tdthc'ovcnvffclirtlhg disgrace
of the fight. What excuse can be-aaude lor a
man calling himself a soldier who would aban
don his guns when the foe was not even in
sight ?
There is no doubt about the extent of the
Federal loss. It has not been exaggerated in
your accounts. Government officials now pre
tend to say that it-is only 1200. The assertion
is a reflection on the American name. The
fact that an artffy of 00,000 men, splendidly
equipped, should abandon all tlytin arti%ry and
war equipage, and retreat’ in such utter disor
der before an enemy wham they but a fiw
hours before affected*to despise, after sustain
ing a loss of only 1200, would afnxji lasting
stigma which no subsequent heroisfh could
wipe out. And yet they .claim to havo fought
with unexampled bravery.
The “ Grand Army of the-Uftion” is still dis
organized, demoralized, paralized. Numbers
of the volunteers leave by each train for thgir
homes. Those who havo money "add cannot
get away, provide themselves with food, and
koep aloof from headqu^tes. General George
B. McClellan will arrive, it is expected, to-mor
row, and, upon repeating himself- to the De
partment, will irauicdti^eljabe -assigned duty.
So soon as he takes command, Hie men will be
obliged to report themselves, unlestrttiey can
previously get away. '
The Confederate pickets extend a considera
ble distance this side of Fairfax Court House!
They aro doubled, and. frequently relieved.
Much fear exists in this city of an invasion,
particularly among officials. I have noticed
for two or three days past, that several Sena
tors and members of Congress gp to Baltimore
by the evening train, and returif* here again
next morning. Such a habitscoahi only bo
practiced by a fear of a night attack.

says
Our troops have fallen back within their orig
inal lines occupied previous to their gsund for
ward movement, the Confederates have again
resum<H their fonner position, and their pickets
range through tile country between here and
Fairfax Court House. Unity's Cross Road, five
miles (nun the Long Bridge on the Columbia
turnpike, is occupied by a New Jersey Regi
ment, with a battery, and our pickets extend to
within hulf a mile of Falls Church. Last eve
ning tltree or lour Secession cavalry were at
Falls Church, and it is reported that there were
a hundred but a half mile back, on the country
coad le tding to the Court House.
Major Wadsworth, who has been at the Court
House attending to the wounded, left there last
night, wud reports that the Confederates were
pouring in again in large numbers.
This morning thd station house at Arlington
Mills was torn down, and a barricade construc
ted with the timber, to repel an atfack of cav
alry orscouts. The bridge over Four Mile Run
has been mined, and every precaution ' taken
aga list a surprise. Everything is quiet alcng
the lines, as tur as I have been able to learn up
to this hour, hut great activity fffevails in the
entrenchmeiUs. All, however, foci perfectly
safe, so fur u£ any attack by the Confederates
i#conccrned, and it is thought here Unit we
shall lay on our oars for a time,TiW»iting the
consummation of the grand preparations for the
n«xi move.
FI.AG OF TRUCE—THE WOUNDED.
On Tuesday morning, wc learn, Gen. McDow
ell despatched his aid,* Major Wadsworth, with
a flag »f truce to the enemy’s lines, .charged
with the duty of making the best passible ar
rangements tor tho care of oursicK and wound- |

advanced pickets at a point about two miles

Gen. Beauregard, from whom an answer was

DISORGANIZATION OF THE ARMY.
Gen. Mansfield has issued the following or-r
der, dated at Washington, 24th uigt. Could
greater proof bo given of the disorganization
of Ms army :
“Ail straggling soldiers will join their respec
tive regiments without delay. [Here follows
the designation ol rendezvous for twenty of the
regiments by name.] Soldftrs attached to re
giments in camp or quartered on the Virginia
side, a<‘d not embraced in the foregoing list,
will rendezvous at Jackson Square, opposite
the President’s bouse. All stragglers foiRid on
the streets six hours after the promulgation of
this order, v ill be deemed guilty of disobedi
ence of orders, urttl be taken charge of.

dent of the Baltimore Sifit, writes :
General .Seott, at four o’clock on Sunday,

from it by bis friends. A* lateVs four o'clock,
he told a Senator that he was confident of tie-
