The Telegram announce? that Vallandigham,
in pursuance of the sentence of the military
commission, commuted by Lincoln, has pre-
ented himself, under flag of truce, before Ges.
Bragg’s lines, and asked to Be received into
our territory, “as an exile.” Gen. Bragg has

This is to certify that on the night* of the
18th of April, 1863, Lieut. Cain, Jr., 2d Lien ,
of Capt. James W. Nichols’ company B, 2d
Ga. Reg., cavalry, was placed by me, then in
command of tho cavalry forces in that vicinity,
at Cartes’ Mill and Burnt Bridge, with a de
tachment of about twenty men, with instruc
tions to hold the position until ordered away,
or driven back by a vastly superior force.—

Akrival.—The steamship Orion, Capt. F. N. I may 19-St a w lot

position until next morning, the enemy mak
ing several attempts to cross in the night. Next
morning the 19th cavalry advanced, with nr
tillery in front. I ordered shout one hundred
men, all Lhad, to his support The force of
the enemy was at least three thousand. We
were compelled to give -ground or be killed or
taken prisoners. Id this detachment sent wit'
Lieut Gain, there were, only four of Captain
Nichols’ men, every one of whom behaved well
to my knowledge, being present at the time.
That evening, when .1 wanted to establish
pickets near the enemy, Lieut. Cain volunteer
ed his services as officer, which was accepted,
as he was familiar with the ground to be car'
ried, and next morning the tneray advanced,
and"drove in our pickeis; not wi'h their guns
loaded^ but fighting every inch of ground dr.vcn
over, until reinforcements were carried them.
But five of Capt Nichols’ men were with Lieut
Cain’s detachment on this occasion; find they
wore Behaving very well, did rot act or look
like cowaids, and when the remainder of the
company was brought into toe action, etch ol
them fired deliberately and rapidly, and did
not pun away at all, as is reported. It is pro
per hero to remaik that only twenty-one of
this company was present for duty, tho re
mainder of it on sick list, and sent to the rear
with sick and disabled horses. The action on
Monday the 20th,lasted about tw.o hours and
half, when the enemy was repulsed.
