Church leader receives award from Pope
for unifying Most Holy Trinity Church

AUGUSTA
At the 8 a.m. Mass last Sun
day, William Brown waited. He
was to be called up to the altar to
receive the Papal Medal and di
ploma, symbolizing the Pontifi
cal Award, pro Ecclesia et
Pontifice, which had been con
ferred upon him by the Holy Fa
ther, Pope John Paul 11.
There’s something in a name,
in the case of the Church of the
Most Holy Trinity on Telfair
Street. In 1971 — according to
Pastoral Assistant Fletcher
Bingham — it was formed by the
merging of Sacred Heart, Im
maculate Conception, and Saint
Patrick’s. Thanks to Mr. Brown,
this happened in spite of the ra
cial tension surrounding the
proposition.
As the President of the Pasto
ral Council, which is a group of
lay members elected for the pur
pose of advising the priest, now
retired Lucy C. Laney teacher
William A. Brown 111 became the
driving force behind the unifica
tion, according to Mr. Bingham.

is given, it is obvious that people
who accomplish such feats and
show such devotion to service do
not come along very often.
