Augusta College Hoops Weekend
AC Lady Jags tear up competition; Jags
defeat themselves with poor shooting
By Kim Lewis
The Augusta College Jaguars
took a two-game losing streak
into this weekend'’s Augusta Col
lege Hoops Weekend. Coach Clint
Bryant saw his team drop two
more games against conference
foes Kennesaw State and Pem
broke State, bringing their record
to 5-9, 1-6 in the Peach Belt Con
ference.
Against Kennesaw State, Au
gusta’s William Adair simply
didn’t get enough touches in the
post. The guards for Coach
Bryant seemed very 3-point ori
ented and often overlooked their
greatest weapon, the power and
slick moves of Adair for 20-foot
jumpshots. Inthe first half, Adair
was 1-6 from the field. He scored
only 5 points for the half, 3 points
coming from the free-throw line.
As a team, Augusta shot 36 per
cent from the field and was out
rebounded 20-12 in the first half.
Out of the 60 shots taken by
Augusta College, 31 were taken
beyond the arc.
Kennesaw State caught AC off
guard with a very controlled and
balanced attack. Led by James
McKnight, Kennesaw led by as
much as 12 points in the first
half. McKnight connected on 8
quick pointsin the first four min
utes of the game to give his team
a 12-5 lead. AC then went on a
seven-minute scoring drought
that put Kennesaw up by 12.
Adair hit his only field goal to
end the half with Kennesaw up

Against Pembroke State,
Coach Bryant’s worries contin

in the first half. Brown was 5-6

17 points. He was followed by
teammate Rosendo Bryden who
had 10 points.
Dan Davis cranked things up

three 3-point shoots in a row to

liam Adair worked an inside-out
side play that resulted in
Harrison receiving the pass from
Adair and burying a 3-point shot.
Harrison’s shot cut Pembroke’s
lead down to 1 but Chris Brown
connected on 3-4 free throws in
the final seconds to give Pem
broke their 4th conference win.
The Augusta College Lady Jag
uars enjoyed a successful week
end as they picked up two big
conference wins. Squeaking out
an 85-83 win against Kennesaw
State and 81-64 victory over Pem
broke State, Coach Barnhart
improved his record to 6-7.
The Lady Jags came out crisp
and ready to play as they took a
42-34 lead. TheJagscouldn't play
any better, as they had an an
swer for everything Kennesaw
threw their way. Dwanna
Gardner couldn’t missin the first
half scoring 19 of her team’s 42
points and racking up four steals.
She would finish the game with
31 points on 12-20 shooting.
Augusta led the entire second
halfbut Kennesaw made a game
of it. Cutting the lead down to 2
points on a jumper by Sarah
McAllister, Kennesaw was back
in the game with 16:00 left to
play. Augusta held off the surge
of the Lady Owls by hitting 78.6
percent from the free-throw line
in the second half. Taking an 85-
83 victory, the next obstacle in
the Lady Jags way was Pem
broke State.
Pembroke State came into the
“Jag Land” posting a 3-8 record.
Coach Barnhart could only hope
that the excellent play from the
night before would carry over
into this game. His wishes were
answered as his Lady Jags
romped over Pembroke 81-64.
Coach Barnhart would see his
ladies turn the ball over 14 times
in the first half as Pembroke
made an effort tostay close. Lady
Brave Nicole Hayden kept her
team in striking distance as she
scored 10 first-half points but
was held to only 2 second-half
points. AC’s Erin Moe came alive,
scoring a career high 20 points.
AC was up 36-34 at intermis
sion. -
Augusta’s Claire Servy picked
up two quick fouls to start the
second halfand was forced to the
bench. Servy eventually fouled
out, seeing only five minutes of
playing time for the half. Servy’s
replacement, Sophomore Kristen
Grant came off the bench and
contributed 10 points, all coming
in the second half. In the last
four minutes, Augusta would |
outscore Pembroke 14-4, sealing I
the 81-64 victory. |

Lady Lions victorious;
men’s team loses to
winless Clark-Atlanta
By Kim Lewis
The Paine Lady Lions came
home to the den Saturday night
to win big against Clark-Atlanta
University 63-45. Coach Spry’s
Lions weren't as successful, as
they lost a heartbreaker to
winless Clark-Atlanta 74-71.
Coach Miggina’s Lions lead
almost the entire game. Behind
a very balanced and controlled
attack, Paine went up 25-21 at
halftime. Both teams couldn’t
find the range as Clark shot a
dismal 34.6 percent from the field
while Paine shot an awful 32.4
percent.
Second half, Clark tried to
make a game out of it. On slick
moves by guard Tina Epps, Clark
cut Paine’s lead down to 3, and
tied the game at 38-38 on a driv
ing layup by Epps where she was
fouled. Paine started to make
the surge to victory in the next

Number 2 in state, Laney
ladies exhaust Josey
By Kim Lewis
Trash-talking was the subject
of Friday night’s game when the
Laney Wildcats took on the rival
Josey Eagles. Oddly, it wasn’t
the players talking trash but the
coaches. Otis Smart, the Laney
girls’coach, called Friday night’s
whipping of coach Lynn
Brantley’s Lady Eagles “just a
rehearsal.” Smart added, “things
could have been worse.”
There’s no doubt that Coach
Smart has one of the best female
teams in state, and Joya Collier,
one of the best post players in

Seeing Clark-Auanta play Sat
urday night, one couldn’ttell that
they were a team in search of
their first victory. Missing only 7
shots in the first half, Clark shot
an impressive 65 percent from
the field. Panther Terrence
Blakey’s speed was too much for
the Lions as he drove to the bas
ket, setting up teammates or con
verting layups. The Lions led

the closing seconds of the half

state. Laney, number 2 in the
state, posted a 69-50 blow-out
over the Eagles.
Collier was too strong for
Josey’s Stella Dixon. Whether
she used her quick drop step to
the basket or stole passes in the
full court press, Collier simply
awed the crowd with her ability.
She ended the game with 31
points after sitting most of the
4th quarter, while Josey’s lead
ing scorer, Stella Dixon, man
aged only 13 points.
Laney jumped out to a 19-5
lead early in the first quarter as
Laney applied an aggressive,
smothering press. Coach Smart
has a luxury that many teams
don’t. Dressing over 21 players,
he was able to shuffle fresh play
ers in and out of the game as
fatigue wore the Eagles down.
By halftime, Josey was down,
40-25.
Coach Brantley’s Eagles
couldn’t pull themselves togeth
er to make a run at Laney. Nu
merous turnovers and miscues
by the Eagles turned out to be
the difference in a crushing 69-
50 defeat.
Brantley’s team is mostly com
prised of young, inexperienced
talent. Losing to the number two
team in the state should be a
learning experience. Josey,
ranked number 8 in the state,
fell to 8-3, including two losses to
Laney.
The Josey boys redeemed
themselves Friday from a previ
ous loss to Laney in early Decem
ber to be victorious 58-52. Laney
was carried by Damion Harley
whoscored a game high 21 points.
He wasthe only double-digit scor
er for Laney.
At halftime, Josey enjoyed a
slim 27-25 lead. Never leading
by more than six points, Josey
left the door open for Laney
throughout thegame. Laney blew
some big opportunities to nar
row the deficit and came up short
58-52.
