ton says his teacher and school
principal “made (him) feel as if
(he) had done something wrong”
by reading his Bible in school.
So he and a civil liberties orga
nization here have filed a federal
lawsuit charging Columbia Ele
mentary School with violating his
First Amendment rights by con
fiscating his Bible.

School officials say Joshua was
disobedient and disruptive to oth
er students with his readings.
Attorney Matthew D. Staver,
who filed the suit on Joshua’s be
balf, told a news conference Mon
day that the 10-year-old has a
right to bring his Bible to school.

Joshua read aloud once when stu
dents were supposed to be work
ing and twice when students were

CONFERENCE
Walker Baptist Association,
Avera, Ga., will conduct its sec
ond annual ministers’ confer
ence. The theme is “Building a
stronger association by building
stronger churches.” Conference
begins with registration at 8:30
a.m. on Saturday, April 29.
Registration fee is $25 including

AM.E. Church, was recognized
as pastor of the year on February
23,1995 at the Annual Founders
Day Program in Columbus, Geor
gia. The award was presented to
Rev. Hudson by Bishop Donald
George Kenneth Ming, presid
ing prelate of the Sixth Episco
pal District for his dynamic, cre
ative, and spiritual leadership.
