Vinyl accessories clearly a winner
It’s sleek, it’s shiny and it’s showing up as fisherman’s sandals, belts and more
By Francine Parnes
Associate Press Special Feature
Ifyou've ever been caught in a
downpour and a plastic bag be
came your hat, you've already
rehearsed for a slick new trend.
Clear plastic, once the strictly
domestic stuff of food wrap and
dry cleaner bags, is suddenly the
funky fabric of fashion.
It's sleek, it's shiny and it's
showing up as fisherman’s san
dals, backpacks, tote bags, skin
ny belts and anything else that
designers can make perfectly
clear.
It doesn’t take a crystal ball to
understand the allure of this
amazing techno chic. It rides on
several trends, including gloss,
transparency and fabulous fakes.
It’s the next step for trendoids
after patent leather.
“What’s happening now in fash
ion is all this plastic and shiny
and glittery stuff, and it’s just
fun to wear,” Nathalie Marciano
says.

Guess offers vinyl jellies (remem
ber the kiddie sandals you wore
at the beach?), now all grown up
with a two-inch stacked heel. At
$45, clear shades include smoke,
glitter fuchsia, glitter blue and
glitter yellow.
The novelty of vinyl makes the
Jjunior customer the obvious mar
ket. Those customers, too young
torecall the trend from the 19605,
can relish it with fashion-forward
resources,
The look shows up mainly in
accessories, though you'll find
jackets from Necessary Objects
and Dolce & Gabbana and jump
ers from Tripp. But in the psy
chedelic '6os, Betsey Johnson,
Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne and
Louis Feraud were tripping the
plastic fantastic with see-through
ready-to-wear. Some were em
bellished with daisies, strategi
cally placed.
And they looked psychedelic,
because they were made of a
groovy futuristic synthetic.
Among the hippest were vinyl
dresses with battery-charged
lights.
“Some of these clothes are re-

ally conversation pieces,” says
Jan Tschirki, senior fashion co
ordinator for juniors at Macy’s in
San Francisco. The store has a
clear vinyl slip dress with silver
industrial front zipper, S3B,
which can be worn over a black
body suit or skinny T-shirt and
tights. There’s also a clear fuch
sia vinyl knee-length trench coat
with patch pockets, SB9. Both
are by Tripp.
“It’s just fun,” she says. “It cer
tainly isn’t serious clothing. It's
not investment dressing.”
Only the adventuresome need
apply, Sue Gustafson says.
“The look appeals to a person
who likes illusion,” says
Gustafson, owner of Flossy
McGrew’s, a vintage clothing
emporium in Denver.
Take vintage clear vinyl
wedgies, for example, which
Gustafson offers for $lB to S4O.
“It takes an imaginative per
son to find interest in plastic
shoes,” she says, “since it doesn’t
look like you're wearing any
thing, it’s more like you’re stand
ingonair. And ifthey have rhine

heel, they almost look like glass
slippers.”
So turn up your confidence a
notch. And think twice if you're
willing to show off your corns.
“It takes someone with pretty
toes who's infatuated with her
feet to really enjoy them,”
Gustafson says. “And it takes a
person who giggles.”
But for more serious tastes,
mainstream designers are also
cashinginonthetrend. Van Eli’s
clear vinyl high-heeled pump
with black patent leather cap toe
and ankle strap is SB4 and speaks
sophistication ever so softly.
Charles Jourdan has
multicolor strappy leather slides
with clear vinyl inserts and a
clear high heel, $l5O. Stuart
Weitzman’s all-clear vinyl
strappy sandals, $l5B, have
roundish Lucite heels.
Add Stuart Weitzman'’s clear
vinyl tote bag with metallic leath
er trim, $234, with one caveat:
The contents are in clear view.
For a good measure of privacy
you might want to line your bag
with a pretty silk scarf.
