Dreams may help you deal with reality
By Charlyn Fargo
Springfield State Journal-Register
SPRINGFIELD, Il
For years, Terry Williams had
the same dream. His car was
working its way up the side of a
mountain. The signs marking
curves were always opposite the
curves and before long, he and
his car would be falling down the
side of the mountain.
Williams never crashed, al
ways waking up instead.
“I used to have it two times a
week for ten years,” said Will
iams, who does car body repair
work. “It quit when I turned 25.”
“I never figured out what it
meant,” said Williams, now 33.
“Someone told me it was a fear of
heights, which I have. Someone
else told me it was my insecurity
of the future. I did come to the
conclusion I always had it when
things were chaotic.”
Williams said he still dreams
every night, although he doesn’t
remember all of them.
“My big thing now is to dream
about a car I'm working on, espe
cially if it’s been hit real hard. I
dream about how it’s going to be
repaired. Sometimes when I go
to work the next day, what I saw
in the dream works.”
Dreaming is part of mankind’s
evolutionary heritage, reaching
back 135 million years. Sigmund
Freud wrote about dreams in
1900, saying they provide the
“royal road” to the unconscious.
New research suggests that
dreams often are distorted re
flections of our daily lives, not
necessarily the symbolic pictures
of unconscious wishes as Freud
believed, or random nonsense

Experts believe that our
dreams are so closely related to
our waking lives that we can use
them to help us solve problems,
work out inner conflicts and har

We all have dreams with typi
cal symbols, said Patricia
Hudson, psychologist and execu
tive director of The Hudson Cen
ter for Brief Therapy in Omaha,
Nebraska. To try to unlock a few
ofthesecrets of dreams, she wrote
“Making Friends With Your Un
conscious Mind.”
“Typical symbols are houses,
cars, sex and violence,” said
Hudson. “And there are common
themes. Water can mean spiri
tual things. Flying dreams can
mean confidence as opposed to
falling, which represents anxi
ety and fears.”
Children often dream about
monsters in pursuit, which can
be mom and dad or anything
they happen to be afraid of that
day.
Hudson recommends asking
oneself a series of questions after
a perplexing dream:
How is this dream like my life?
If you pretend you are part of
the dream, what part are you in?
Are there double meanings or
jokes?
Hudson said dreams are try
ing to be our “buddy.” If a dream
is particularly dramatic and in
your face, it’s a sign that some
one is trying to get your atten
tion.
Everyone dreams every night,
usually at least four times, said
Hudson.
“We spend 5 to 10 per cent of
our lives dreaming. Given that
input, I think they may have
some relevance.”

Hudson emphasizes to her stu
dents that everyone plays some
part in his or her own dreams;
that dreams from the same night
usually deal with the same sub
ject; and the overall mood of a
dream is important.
Ray Morelli of Sherman, a re
tired school superintendent from
Metamora, said he often dreamed
that he was at Illinois State Uni
versity and late for a class.
“I'm running everywhere, and
I can’t find that class,” said
Morelli. “It's always at ISU. I
didn’t ever figure out what the
dream meant, but it stopped
when I retired.”
Interpreting dreams is an im
portant part of psychotherapy,
said Dr. Michael Schwartz, chair
man of the psychotherapy train
ing center for the department of
psychiatry at Southern Illinois
University medical school.
“We definitely talk about
dreams, it’s one of the things we
ask patients to remember,” he
said. '
“One ofthe main things dreams
do is provide an outlet for re
pressed wishes or fears that may
be partially expressed or largely
disguised.”
Schwartz believes dreams can
provide subtle communication
hints. .
“People may have a common
dream, but in it, an individual
may see the number 128.
“It may mean nothing at first.
But later, they will recall that
was the street address of a house
they lived as a small child. It tells
you the dream was something to
do with a childhood experience.”
