Georgia Republicans celebrate success over Democrats
By Joan Kirchner
Associated Press Writer
SAVANNAN, Ga.
(AP)Georgia Republicans, gid
dy over the attention their new
success has drawn, bashed the
Democrats with greater confi
dence Saturday and tossed
around predictions of bigger
gains in 1996,
U.S. House Speaker Newt
Gingrich led the charge, continu
ing his attack on President
Clinton and congressional Dem
ocrats for balking at the GOP
plan to rein in Medicare.
The House Budget Committee
has passed a plan to save $283
million from Medicare over sev
en years by cutting its 10 percent
yearly growth rate in half.
Gingrich says the plan would not
result in lower payments to re
cipients.
“We need your help, on talk
radio, in letters to the editor, in
talking to yourfriends and neigh
bors, because the liberals are
going to lie about Medicare just
as they lied about school lunch
programs,” Gingrich told about
2,000 delegates gathered for the
state party convention.
“This is not cutting Medicare,
and it is dishonest to have the
Democratic leadership in the
White House and the Congress
systematically disinforming the
people of the United States.”
Talking to reporters earlier,
Gingrich predicted that Repub
licans would win control of the
Georgia Legislature next year if
Clinton is the Democratic nomi
nee for president.
“I think if President Clinton is
ontheticket in’96, we're going to
take control of the state Legisla
ture,” Gingrich said.
Clinton, who has said he plans
to seek re-election, has dropped
in the polls in Georgia since he
took the state in his 1992 victory.
Republicans now hold 87 seats
in the 236-member General As
sembly. They would need to pick
up 25 seats in the House and
eight seats in the Senate in the
1996 elections to seize a majori
ty.
. “We Republicans have our
hand on the switch and in 1996,
the lights go on in Georgia,” the
GOP’s latest convert, Public Ser
vice Commissioner Bob Durden,
explained to his new political
friends.
Later Saturday, former feder
‘al housing official Rusty Paul of
Sandy Springs won the job of
