Well water consumers

Salt water already has fouled some wells
in Brunswick and in Hilton Head Island,
S.C.
“The current information ... shows that
over a long period of time, the saltwater
wedge will move toward Savan
nah,” said Nolton Johnson, wa
ter resources branch chief of the
Georgia Environmental Protec
tion Division.
Decades of heavy pumping
have drawn sea water inland
through underground passages
toward the Floridan Aquifer, a
vast limestone formation that
supplies fresh water to coastal
Georgia and parts of South Caro
lina.
Meeting the area’s growing
demand for fresh water while
holding back the ocean water
“might be the most important
issue we deal with in the next 10
years, and forever,” said
Chatham County Commission
Chairman Joe Mahany. “Protect
ingthat water supplyiscritically
important to us.”
Moreresearchis planned, such
as drilling of monitoring wells off
Tybee Island to look for migrat
ing salt water.
Savannah’s Metropolitan Plan
ning Commission is dealing with
the issue with a draft water
supply management and conser
vation plan, issued in January.
The report says that over the
next 30 years, Chatham Coun
ty’s demand for drinkable water
will increase by 26 million gal
lons a day to 145 million gallons.
By 2025, about 27 million gal
lons a day of aquifer water could
be saved through conservation
programs and by exchanging well
water for Savannah River water,
the report says.
Johnson praised the plan’s rec
ommendations but said its call
for cutting well water usage by
49 gallons per county resident
may not be enough.
Environmentalists says the
plan puts too much of a burden
on residential users and too little
on industrial customers.
Industries agree that they need
to reduce dependence on wells,
but say they already have re
duced groundwater consumption
in favor of treated Savannah Riv
er water.
Industries can’t use much more
river water without major ex
pansion of the county’s treatment
plant. Untreated Savannah Riv
er water can’t be used for drink
ing or most industrial needs.
How much the expansion would
cost and whether taxpayers
would help pay for it are ques
tionsthat could generate months
or years of controversy.
Planning Commission staffers
say the document meets their
basic goal of calling attention to
the issue.
Local officials are waiting for
the state’s promised plan, which
they expect to call for splitting
theburden of well-water cutbacks
among Georgia’s 24 coastal coun
ties.
“We've done all we can do,” said
David Rutherford, an environ
mental planner for the Planning
Commission. “The state has been
twiddling their thumbs for a long
time.”
Johnson dismissed that com
plaint. “We arestill inthe process
of looking at options,” he said.
“We need a little more time to do
that.”
