- Miss Universe
says ‘school
can wait’
“Tworked really hard to
become Miss Universe
and I am sure a lot of
opportunities will now
become available to me.
School will always be
|there if I want to go
back.”
By Sean Kelly
Associated Press Writer
WINDHOEK, Namibia
She has almost a half million
dollars in cash and prizes, in
cluding an elephant to be named
for her, and offers to tour the
world. .
So 21-year-old Chelsi Smith,
Miss USA and now Miss Uni
verse, answered quickly Satur
day when asked about her post
poned college education.
- “School can wait,” the brown
eyed, brown-haired Miss Smith
told The Associated Press, hours
after being crowned Miss Uni
verseinthe 44th annual pageant
and the first held in Africa.
_ Shebegan her reign after a few
“hours sleep with a Rolls Royce
ride through the streets of
Windhoek, capital of the former
_German and South African colo
_ny, which gained independence
_as Namibia in 1990.
. Such public appearances and
luxurious trappings can intoxi
cate, and Miss Smith said she
. wants to drink it all in.
© “I worked really hard to be
‘come Miss Universe and I am
‘sure a lot of opportunities will
‘now become available to me,”
said the student from SanJacinto
College near Houston, Texas.
“School will always be there if I
.want to go back.”
Miss Smith began, as she puts
it, making a career out of beauty
pageants by entering the Miss
‘Houston contest three years ago.
The motivation then was money
for school and a car, not fame.
She won Miss Houston, then
Miss Southeast Texas and final
ly Miss Texas, her ticket to the
Miss USA title that brought her
-to Namibia with 81 other women
for the pageant, which began at
1 a.m. local time Saturday to
accommodate U.S. television
viewers.
Twohourslater, she stood with
her hands on her face and tears
in her eyes as the crown was
placed on her head. First runner
up was Miss India, 21-year-old
Manpreet Brar of New Delhi.
Miss Canada, 20-year-old Lana
Buchburger of Calgary, Alberta,
was second runner up.
Miss Smith, who is from Deer
Park, Texas, described herselfas
a deeply religious person who
thanked God first and her family
second for her successful rise to
become the sixth Miss Universe
from the United States.
Her goals as Miss Universe
were to work with children, par
ticularly on issues concerning
racism and health, and to pro
mote women’srights. That theme
was evident in her choice of a
national costume, a 75-year-old
dress commemorating the pas
sage of the 19th Amendment to
the U.S. Constitution in 1920
that gave women the right to
vote.
Miss Smith said she was
pleased to be the first Miss Uni
verse chosenin Africa, due to her
own links to an African Ameri
can heritage. But she called her
self bi-racial, refusing to be clas
sified.
“My mother is white and my
father is black,” she said.
“I think that I am an individu
al and, actually, if I wanted to
choose a race, who says that I
would choose African American?
... I think that both sides of my
family are very proud of my say
ing that I am bi-racial, instead of
choosing one or the other.”
She said she would save most
of her pageant winnings.
One prize will remain in Afri
ca, an elephant Miss Smith will
receive Sunday at the Ombengo
Game Reserve near Namibia’s
Etosha National Park. She will
get a gift certificate naming the
animal in her honor and giving
her the right to visit it whenever
she wants.
