Jackson gives fiery speech
at Baptist convention
CHARLOTTE
(AP) In a fiery speech to the Pro
gressive National Baptist Conven
tion, Jesse Jackson warned political
leaders to respect black Americans
and blasted House Speaker Newt
Gingrich for “talking down to us.”
Jackson decried the fact that so
many African-American men arein
jailand “halfofall the public housing
built in America in the last 10 years
are jail cells.”
In an emotional and wide-rang
ing, 45-minute address to the con
vention on Thursday, Jackson criti
cized Republican Gingrich for
preaching family values and a halt
to illegitimate births.
“His daddy’s not named Gingrich,”
Jackson shouted to the delegates.

our fathers anymore; it’s got to
be real to me. People are wanting
toexperience this Pentecost first
hand. They don’t want to just
hear about the good old days.”
Dozens of youth groups hit the
streets of downtown St. Louis
Thursday, spreading the gospel
through music, pantomimes and
literature. Those are the kinds of
experiences that make the
church’s teachings directly rele

“He doesn’t live with his first wife.
He can'’t talk down to us. Where is
his moral authority?”
Asked later to elaborate, Jackson
said, “The point is, you have these

ing unwed mothers, but they live in
glass houses.
“Newt Gingrich comes from, grew
upin, an unwed household. Sodid I.

out of one. He lives in one.”
“He was conceived in wedlock,”
press secretary Tony Blankley said
of Gingrich. “They were separated

isn’t known for his careful checking
of the facts.”
