EVENTS
SUNDAYS AT THE MORRIS MUSEUM OF
ART will include the following events: a re
freshing tour of the art collections on Sunday,
August 20. Also a preview of the Augusta
Opera’s principal cast of A Grand Night for
Singing will be held on Sunday, August 27,
1995 at 2:00 p.m. All Sunday programs free of
charge.
20THANNUAL HEPHZIBAH COUNTRY FAIR
AND BARBEQUE FESTIVAL will be held Tues
day through Saturday, September 26 - 30. It
will be hosted by the Hephzibah Lions Club,
Hephzibah Association and Richmond County
Recreation and Parks Department. Amuse
ment rides will open on Tuesday, September
26 at 6:00 p.m. and continue nightly until
11:00 p.m. Atraditional “Country Fair” setting
will begin Friday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m.
Chicken dinners will be sold on Saturday from
11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The parade will
begin 10:00 a.m. For more information, call

ARECORDAND CD COLLECTORS EXPO will
be held at Holiday Inn West, I-20 at Washing
ton Road on Sunday, August 20, from 10:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. LPs, CDs, imported vinyl,
albums, and music collectibles such as con
cert photos or tour books can be found at this
event. Admission is $3.00, with children 12
and under admitted free with parent. The

THE SECOND ANNUAL WALTON COMMU
NITY FAIR will be held Saturday, September 9,
from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Walton Reha
bilitation Hospital. Bring the whole family to
this day-long event featuring all the classic
elements of a fair -- clowns, balloons, food
and laughter -- along with activities to help the
general public learn about people with disabil
ities, resources for people with disabilities

THE 7TH ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL BASH
will be held at Doughty Park, 1200 Nellieville
Road on Friday. August 18, 1995, from 4:00 -
7:00 p.m. for all ages. Prizes, games, hotdogs

bring a friend! No fee will be charged. Enter

SHEPEARD COMMUNITY BLOOD CENTER’S
ANNUAL LABOR DAY BLOOD GIVE-IN will take
place on Tuesday, August 29, 1995 from 8:00
a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Activities Building at
First Baptist Church, Augusta, located at the
intersection of Wheeler Road and Walton Way.
The Tuesday before Labor Day was chosen to
allow time to process the donations to insure
they are ready for use during the holiday
weekend. Free breakfast, lunch and dinner will
be provided for all donors and free babysitting
is also available. Clowns and other entertain

THE NATIONAL SCIENCE CENTER’S PRE
VIEW DISCOVERY CENTER will feature “Sci
ence on Wheels” on Saturday, September 2,
1995, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The centeris on
“B” Street, just off Chamberlain Avenue, on
Fort Gordon. The National Science Center's
two Mobile Discovery Centers will be show
cased. The mini-planetarium, STARLAB, will
be open, as well as Kid Scape, Computer World,
the Teacher Resource Genter and the Science
Store. Admission is $2.00 for adults 18 and
over, and SI.OO for children 4 to 17, military
and Department of the Army civilians. Children

AUGUSTA BLACK EXPO
AUGUSTABLACK EXPO 1995 will take place
on Saturday, August 19, from noon to 6:00
p.m. at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic
Center Arena. There will be live entertainment,
a free health fair, door prizes, and much more.

AUGUSTASUPER C SEMINOLES SEMI-PRO
FOOTBALL TEAM will be holding tryouts Mon
day - Friday at the YMCA at Martin Luther King
Jr. Blvd. beginning 6 p.m. The Seminoles, a
newly organized team in the Augusta area, is a
member of the NMFL Association, Charlotte,

KARATE | & Il - TAE-KWON-DO will be held
at the Hephzibah/Carroll Community Center,
4977 Windsor Spring Road on Mondays at

Tae-Kwon-Do is the oldest and most powerful
form of hand-and-foot fighting. Students will
receive instruction in traditional Karate basics

STEP AEROBICS will be held at the Hephzi
bah/Carroll Community Center, 4977 Windsor

required. A fee of $2.50 per class will be
charged. The newest trend in fitness. It gives
a maximum workout in minimum time.

This is the perfect workout for beginners and

increases flexibility, endurance, muscle tone

THEI99SU.S. ARMY MEDICAL COMMAND
SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT will
be hosted by the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army
Medical Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia. The
tournament will begin Thursday, August 17,
and end with the championship game Sunday,
August 20. Over 35 teams representing Army
medical facilities throughout the United States
and Puerto Rico will be traveling to Fort
Gordon to participate. Opening ceremonies
for the tournament will begin Friday, August
18, at 8:30a.m. on Hospital Field and end with
the trophy presentation on Sunday, August 20.

THE AUGUSTA FENCERS CLUB will offer a
course in beginning foil fencing beginning
Tuesday, September sth. The class will meet
at the Augusta Ballet School on Walton Way

MUSIC, THEATRE, FILM
THE AUGUSTA MINI THEATRE will hold
auditions for singers, dancers, actors and back
stage crew for the hit musical The Wiz on the
following dates: Thursday, August 17; Friday,
August 18; Tuesday, August 22, and Wednes
day, August 23. All times for auditions will be
6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Augusta Mini Theatre,
430 Bth Street, Augusta, Georgia. Roles are
available for children (starting age 6), teens,
adults and senior citizens of all ages. Please
bring a non-returnable photo. Also, bring
sheet music or instrumental cassette if you
plan to audition for a singing role. For more

THE U. S. ARMY SIGNAL CORPS STAGE
BAND will present jazz standards from the
1940 s to the 1990 s in a concert on Tuesday,
August 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the Riverwalk Am
phitheater indowntown Augusta. The concert
band plays at Hopeland Gardens in Aiken, SC
on Monday, September 11, at 6:30 p.m., and
again on Friday, September 15, at 7:00 p.m. in
Alexander Hall at Fort Gordon for the 10th
anniversary of the Association of Retired Mil
itary Musicians. All concerts are free and open
to the public.
VOLUNTEERS
THE SENIOR CITIZENS COUNCIL is seeking
volunteers to deliver meals to homebound
senior citizens in the Augusta area. To be part
of the Senior Citizens Council's Meals-On-
Wheels program, volunteers are needed for
about an hour between 10:30-11:30 a.m. Vol
unteers may deliver meals on a scheduled
basis as little as once a week or may serve inan
occasional backup basis. All volunteers are
provided withan orientation to their routes and
delivery procedures. For more information

MORRIS MUSEUM OF ART will conduct
docent training sessions from August 15 - 31.
You need not have a background in art or art
history to participate in the program. Training
will be provided by the education department

A STATE-WIDE CONTEST TOO SHOW OFF
SCHOOL CHILDRENS’ WRITING AND ART
SKILLS will begin in July. Winners will have
their work published in a book entitled Wel
come to Georgia, Kids! set for release next
spring. Contestants are asked to create a short
story and accompanying art about life in Geor
nig as they might tell a visitor. Thirty winning
entries will be chosen for inclusion in the full
color book. Kay Borden is the contest creator
and president of Franklin-Sarrett Publishers in
Marietta which will publish the anthology.
Groups, schools and businesses can help by
volunteering to serve as contest judges, stag
ing events to encourage participation, or do

“PALM AND PINE: ART OF GEORGIA AND
SOUTH CAROLINA” will be on display at the
