Rep. Mel Reynolds was con

aformer campaign worker while
she was underage, then trying to
thwart the investigation. As the
verdict was read, Reynolds sat
expressionless. He repeatedly
mouthed aninaudible phrase and
looked at the jury as the verdict
was read. His wife and mother
sat next to each other in the
courtroom with little expression
on their faces. He testified that

Ms. Beauchamp declined to
comment on the taped conversa

it. The tape was not released to
school investigators.
The head coach, Dave Przybocki,
said last month he was unaware
ofthe symbol’s meaning. He prom

ing the symbol near the on-deck
circle.
Woodbridge lawyer Linda
Borsky, who represents both
coaches, declined to comment un

Kelly’s report and talk to her cli

All 16 of this year’s Brentsville
baseball players and both coaches
are white, and only a few of the
school’s approximately 900 stu
dents are black. The Brentsville
area has just over 14,000 resi
dents, about 500 of whom are
black.
The school system will do what
it can to educate both students
and adults about the importance
of sensitivity toward others, Ms.
Beauchamp said.
The incident “did speak to us
that we need to do work in the
community. I don’t think any of
the students ... meant it to hurt
anybody, but they need to learn
and need to be educated that, yes,
it does hurt,” she said.

The black congressman said
he is the target of a racially bi

than 14 hours before reaching
their verdict. The most serious

penalty of four years in prison.

Prosecutors built their case on

Butthe trial ultimately focused
on the conflicting testimony of
Reynolds, 43, a two-term Demo

Beverly Heard. After 13 nights
in jail for refusing to testify,
Heard emerged to tell the jury
she had a consensual sexual af

“They are the gatekeepers of

The lawsuit filed Tuesday claims
the 7,700-member Police Protec

providing it for white officers.
“The accusations are baseless
and we are looking forward to an
aggressive defense,” said the

1992 when she was 16 and 17.
But she said he doesn’t deserve
prison and asked the jury to find
him innocent. Reynolds testified
that he succumbed to his weak

contact with her. He accused
Heard oftrying to extort him and
said prosecutors used “Gestapo
tactics” in an out-of-control ef
fort to convict him.
Prosecutor Andrea Zopp de
nied thatrace and politics played
a role. “The defendant sits here

The lawsuit adds to ongoing
problemsbetweenthe twogroups.
Ross infuriated union officials
earlier this year by calling retired
Detective Mark Fuhrman, a key
prosecution witness in the O.J.
Simpson trial, a racist.
The Bryant association also
said the union had squandered
membership funds in a futile
defense of former officers Stacey
Koon and Laurence Powell, who
are serving federal prison terms
African-American, but because
he committed a crime,” she said
in closing arguments.
Heard launched the case in
June 1994 by contacting police
but stunned prosecutors by re
canting within weeks of telling
her story. Prosecutors accused
Reynolds of engineering the
about face.
The case was just one of sever
al accusations against Reynolds.
In May he was indicted again on
witness tampering and obstruc
tion of justice for trying to influ
ence witnesses in the sex case. It
is unclear when he might face
trial on those charges. And for at
least a year federal authorities
have been investigating possible
mishandling of Reynolds’ person
al, campaign and congressional
finances. That includes whether
he fraudulently obtained a mort
gage for a new house and wheth
er he converted campaign or of
fice funds to personal use.
for violating Rodney King’s
civil rights.
“The league rushes to cham
pion causes for white officers
who prey on the black commu
nity ... while brazenly refusing
to provide even minimal assis
tance to deserving black offic
ers,” the lawsuit claims.
A longstanding area of con
tention between thetwogrcups
has been the union’s failure to
elect a black person to its nine
member board of directors.

Miles, 22, was shot in the leg
from behind on July 26 as he

about drugs being sold in the
