NYC’s first black bishop dies at 57
NEW YORK
(AP) Bishop Emerson J. Moore,
who welcomed Pope John Paul IT
to Harlem in 1979 and became
New York’s first black Catholic
bishop three years later, has died.
Moore, 57, who battled an un
specified illness for the last five
years of his life, died Thursday
shortly after his family had left
his bedside, the Archdiocese of
New York announced Friday.

bishops for strangling political
opposition, for corruption and for
alleged rights abuses.

Moore was born a Baptist in
1938, the son of a subway motor
man and a hospital nurse. His
family moved from Harlem to
the South Bronx, where Moore
grew up and converted to Ca
tholicism at age 15.
He was ordained a priest by
Cardinal Francis Spellman in
military band and native danc

coming crowd of the three-na

cled the airport and lined the
highway into the city.
The pope, who visited Kenya in
1980 and 1985, appealed for Af
ricanleaders to “exercise all their
wisdom.”
He urged them to search for
“development which is not just
economic and material, but in
volves building a civilization of
respect for all of society’s mem
bers - for their rights and free
dom.”
In a pastoral letter last year,
Kenya's bishops said the country
was sliding into totalitarianism,
with a clique of politicians ma
nipulating the system for per
sonal gain.
In April, the bishops issued
another letter urging Moi to con
said the Rev. Bertrand Buby,
assistant professor of religious
studies at Dayton.

The government dismissed the
latest letter as “blackmail and
incitement” and one cabinet min
isterthreatened the bishops with

criticisms.
Moi alsc has demanded that
the lergy stay out of politics.
But the pope, in a document
issued in Cameroon at the begin
ning of the six-day trip, told
priests to stand up to injustices.
On Tuesday, the pope plans to
lead an outdoor Mass in Nairobi.
Hundreds of people planned to
spend the night in the park for a
spot close to the altar. About 6
million of Kenya’s 25 million peo
ple are Catholic. :
