Sports Today!
Augustans were pleasantly surprised to see a famil
iar face on the weekly ESPN broadcast Black College
Sports Today. Former Augusta sportscaster Sam
Crenshaw is the host and the program provides cover
age of sporting news and great gridiron action from the
nation’s historically black colleges and universities.
This week, Crenshaw brought coverage of the excit
ing matchup between the Rattlers of Florida A&M and
the Tigers of Tennessee State. Running-back Richard
Huntley of Winston-Salem was also featured. Huntley
recently tied the CIAA career touchdown record.
BCST also paid tribute to head coach Bill Davis of
Tennessee State who after 17 years is one of the
- winningest coaches in Division [-AA.

Pair of mismatches
slated for SWAC
It is not often that a team with a losing record is such
an odds-on favorite to kill their opposition, but that’s
exactly the scenario when the Grambling Tigers take on
Prairie View A&M this Saturday. Despite tripping 1-2 in
conference play, Grambling will likely help Prairie View
reach a milestone in their September finale. Last week
Prairie View tied the record of 50 consecutive defeats
when they were whomped 44-
7 by Tarleton State. They
will own the title outright
after Saturday.
In the meantime,
Grambling Coach Eddie
Robinson has been frustrat
ed with two back-to-back loss-
es, postponing his crowning achievement of 400 career
victories. A victory against lowly Prairie View would
move Robinson toward that magic 400 number.
In another lop-sided contest SWAC-leader Southern
University will bring its high-powered offense to winless
Mississippi Valley. Southern solidified its hold onto the
number-one black college ranking with a 45-22 win over
previous No. 4 Hampton. The Jags’ win was their sixth
straight, dating back to last season. !
Southern’s 45-22 victory over a well-oiled Hampton
University team was impressive. Southern scored four
touchdowns in the first half to jump out to a 28-16 lead
at the half. Despite 425 total offensive yards for Hamp
ton, Southern’s vaunted offense compiled 265 passing
wards and ran for another 160. Hampton Coach Pete
Richardson applauded his team’s efforts.
“I thought the team did a good job. We knew this would
be a physical game for us. That’s the way they (HU) play.
They were aggressive and we tried to trick them up.”
