butions far beyond
those in the everyday
classroom.
Michael N. Searles, assistant
professor of history, will present
a paper during September at the
Blacksinthe West: Image and
Reality Symposium at the
University of Wyoming’s Ameri
can Heritage Center. His paper,
Taking Out the Buck and Put
ting in a Trick: The Black Work
ing Cowboy’s Artof Breaking and
Keeping a Good Cow Horse was
one of 25 selected on topics relat
ingtoblacksinthe West. Searles
received a master’s degree from
Howard University and is pur
suing a Ph.D. in history of the
American West with an empha
sis on the black cowboy.
James R. Rosen, AC’S Mor
tis Eminent Scholar in Art, has
been selected as an artist-in-res
idencethisfall atthe James Baird
Gallery in St. John's, Newfound
land. The selection is competi
tive and is open to artists
throughout the world. Best
known forbringing earlier works
of art into the 20th century,
Rosen’s work at the gallery will
concentrate primarily on land
scapes. He has participated in
other fellowships and artist-in
residence programs including
one in Ferrara, Italy. His works
appear in collections of many
museums, among them the Mu
seum of Modem Art, the Metro

articles have appeared in numer
ous journals, and he is repre
sented in Who’s Who in Ameri
can Art. He has taught at AC
since 1989.
Dr. Guy Warner, assistant
professor of communications, has
been named to the Florida Com
munity College Activities Asso
ciation’s (FCCAA) Hall of Fame.
Inductees were selected by their
peers for contributions made to
the FCCAA and the member col
leges in the field of academics,
athletics and activities over a 30
year span. Dr. Warner formerly
served as a teacher and director
of forensics at Florida College, as
well as an adjunct speech teach
er at the University of South
Florida and Hillsborough Com
munity College in Tampa. His
students won 433 awards in
state, regional and national in
tercollegiate speech competition,
including a national Phi Rho Pi
championship. Dr. Warner be
gan teaching part-time at AC in
1986 and became a full time in
structor in 1990. He will receive
the award Oct. 25 in Tampa.
Dr. Duncan Robertson, as
sociate professor of French, re
cently had abook published enti
tled The Medieval Saints’ Lives:
Spiritual Renewal and Old
French Literature. The book trac
es literature from early Chris
tian martyrs and Egyptian leg
ends to Old French verse of the
11th and 12th centuries. Five
chapters survey individual

themes: 1) the passions of the
martyrs, 2) the lives of the desert
fathers, 3) Latin sacred biogra
phy in France, 4) Martinian sa
cred biography in Old French,
and 5) hagiographical romance.
Dr. Robertson received degrees
from Yale and Princeton univer
sities and has a native proficien
cy of the French language. He
also speaks Spanish and Ger
man fluently.
Dr. Edward CashinJr., pro
fessor of history and chairman of
the Department of History and
Anthropology, recently pub
lished a collection of Georgia
Colonial documents entitled Set
ting Out to Begin a New World.
He has published about a dozen
books including General
Sherman’s Girlfriend, The His
tory of Augusta College, and The
Story of Augusta. Dr. Cashin
received an award from the Geor
gia Historical Society for the best
book published on Georgia histo
ry in 1991-92 for his work,
Lachlan McGillivray, Indian
Trader- The Shaping of the
Southern Colonial Frontier. Dr.
Cashin received master and doc
toral degrees from Fordham
(N.Y.) University. Heis a native
of Augusta.
Dr. Cathy L. Cobb, assistant
professor of chemistry, was pri
mary author on a just-released
book, Creations of Fire: Chemis
try’s Lively History from Alche
mytothe Atomic Age. Atwo-year
effort, the book is written in non
technical language and incorpo
rates the personalities and char
acters of a range of chemists in

at California State University.
Jackson (Jack) K. Widener
Jr., dean of the School of Busi
ness Administration, has been
appointed to the Board of the
Augusta Housing Authority. An
Augusta native, Widener is ac
tive in civic affairs, serving on
the boards of St. Joseph Center
for Life, Brandon Wilde Retire
ment Center, General Aviation
Board of Augusta, and First
Union National Bank of Augus
ta Advisory Board. He is past
president of Augusta Rotary
Club and Richmond County His
torical Society and has served as
a chairman of the Metro Augus
ta Chamber of Commerce, a
trustee of the Augusta College
Foundation, and a member of
Augusta Tomorrow and various
other civic and business activi
ties. He is a registered profes
sional engineer, earning his de
gree from Georgia Tech and an
M.B.A. degree from Georgia
State University. He also at
tended advanced management
courses at Emory and Harvard
universities.
Widener was the featured
speaker at the Aug. 29 meeting
of the Uptown Kiwanas Club.

The Philip Morris Corp. pre
sented a SIO,OOO check Wednes
day, for victims of the recent flood.
Mr. Henry Turner, Philip
Morris Corporation in Atlanta,
made the presentation atthe Red
Cross office on 12th Street at 5
p.m. Mr. Turner, whose mother
lives in Augusta, was inspired
and deeply touched by a photo
graph, in an Atlanta newspaper,
of a child’s teddy bear floating in
the flood waters.
