The Central Savannah River
Girl Scout Council, along with
businesses, civic groups, social
service agencies and churches in
the CSRA are making plans to
celebrate Georgia Red Ribbon
Week, Oct. 23-31.
“The red ribbon has become
the symbol for drug-free living,”
explains Cher Best, public rela
tions director for the CSR Girl
Scout Council. “Communities can
tie red ribbonsto doorways, lamp
posts or wherever to show their
support for a drug-free commu
nity.” The national campaign
began in 1985, after a federal
drug enforcement agent was
killed in the line of duty.
Georgia communities have
participated since 1987. Gover
nor Zell Miller will act as honor
ary chairperson for this year’s
campaign.
Local communities organize
public awareness events such as
ribbon-tying ceremonies, pa
rades, contests, and other cele
brations. In the CSRA, Girl
Scouts will be handing out red
ribbons to businesses, churches
and the media. On Oct. 23, Girl
Scouts and the city of Augusta
will host a tree-tying ceremony
on Eighth Street at 5 p.m. The
public will be able to gttach red
ribbons to a city tree to show
support for a drug-free commu
nity. Additionally, CSR Girl
Scouts will help Harlem Middle
School with its drug-free efforts
by participating in the school’s
block party and assembly and by
having a red ribbon tree on the
campus. “We want to have as
many groups involved as possi
ble this year,” says Ms. Best.
Anyone wanting to participate
should call (706) 826-4516.
