National Black Arts Festival kicks off 1996 membership drive
The National Black Arts Fes

most prestigious event celebrat
ing the work of artists of African

bership drive November 1, it was
announced by Avery Brooks, di
rector of the NBAF.
“We are excited to be able to
offer membership packages for
_ everyone, regardless of their fi
\ nancial situation,” said Brooks.

First-time candidate Rob
Zetterberg, whois running for the
District 3 seat on the new council/
commission board, is pledging to
unite the citizens of Augusta and
Richmond County, by “(breaking)
the barriers of racial tension.” He
is qualified to do this, he says,
because he hasarecord oftreating
people fairly and developing “trust
relations.” “Open dialogue is a
product of that,” he said. His plan
1s to encourage more civic partici
pation, and feels that it is impor
tant to “(build) up people coming
into the community that want to
lift the community up.”
“I'm not talking about an over
night thing,” he said.
He spoke of commanding, dur
ing his career in the Army, a bat
talion containing 85 women, and
of selecting a black communica
tions officer, which is an impor
tant position. He was also instru
mental, he said, in helpinga wom
an achieve the rank of command
er. “And it was all done on merit,”
he said, “versus the color of their
skin or their gender.”
About set-asides for woman-and
minority-owned businesses, he
admits to a certain lack of knowl
edge about the specificlaw. “But,”
he said, “we need to find mecha
nisms in our society that will al
low small and mincrity business
es to compete.
“I'm a small-business man my
selfand I know the struggle of the
small-business owner.”
He feels, however, that it is the
job of the members of the commu
nity —the banks, for instance —
as opposed to that of the govern
ment, to make sure that all busi
nesses are treated fairly.
“Philosophically, I support as
sistance to small businesses and
disadvantaged businesses within
legal parameters. I'd rather cre
ate a robust society in Augusta.”
He says it is important to make
an effort “within the community”
to teach people how to “be entre
preneurial.”
To the issue of getting more
women and minorities into de
partment head positions, he re
plied that it is important to be
sensitive to the need those groups
have of representation.
“I also think that we need to hire
the most competent individual
regardless of race, color or creed,”
he said. “I strongly believe minor
ities should be represented across
the entire spectrum of our com
munity.” He says he will do all he
can “within the law” to ensure
that happens.
He does insist that direct gov
ernment involvement needs to be
kept to a minimum, that it is the
community’s responsibility to
clean up its own act.
“We have had a long history of
trying to solve social problems by
throwing money at them,” he says.
“Money is not the answer. It’s peo
ple involvement.
“I don’t want to blow any smoke
at this thing. Words are cheap.
action is what we need.”
