inward to help community

Many people go through life
not recognizing they are trapped
insituations that keep them from
being happy. According to Jo
seph Harrison Jr., pastor of
Mount Hill Missionary Baptist
Church, Montmorenci, South
Carolina, people need to be de
livered from what is keeping
them in bondage.
“When I first came to Mount
Hill two years ago, I met with
each member. I met with them
weekly, he said. I discovered
many embers were suffering from
low self esteem, they did not feel
good about themselves, problems
in their life needed to be solved,
and they were in search for a
breakthrough of how to deal with
hurt and pain, without being
afraid, or ashamed of others
knowing their problems.
“From those sessions, [ knew a
recovery program was needed, if
I were going to be the pastor
here.” The program would help
them overcome the barriers that
kept them in bondage.
Thefirst ofthe year, arecovery
program was put into place.
Harrison formed a praying team
called the Prayer Warriors. He
started with the leaderships of
the church and anyone else who
wanted to join the team. It con
sisted of people who were recov

codependence, inables (be used,

riages, divorces, rejection, low
self-esteem, and delayed grief of
losing a loved one.
The Prayer Warriors pray with
everyone that comes to the altar
for special prayer. They pray for
whatever the person asks them
to pray for. They take each per
son in the prayer room and pray.
Harrison didn't stop after he
formed a praying team. He con
tinued making himself available
to his church. He knew the
church was hungry for the word
of God. He was there to give to
the people what they needed.
Harrison shared with his con
gregationin his sermonsthe hurt
and pain he experienced in his
life with his congregation. That
was one of the avenues of letting
the people see that he had also
been hurt. His sermons helped
the members recognized their
problems and to seek help toover
come them.
He saw a breakthrough in the
church.
He started offering more than
a Sunday morning service to
Mount Hill Missionary Baptist
Church. Harrison interjected
teaching methods to his preach
ing. This method helped the peo
ple see they needed more than
and lists the agency and gift pur
chased. The card can be given to
friends and family for Christ
mas. The projects selected for
the first year are both local and
international. Locally, Augusta
Urban Ministry and Augusta

preaching and singing. They
needed to be taught the word of
God.
“I began weekly Bible Study.
This was not done before I came,”
he said.
“They were hungry for the
word. They wanted to know how
to apply the word of God to their
everyday existence. Many had
never studied the Bible, effec
tively.
“Through my teachings, it
proved to be an effective medi
um,” he said. According to
Harrison, it gave some of the
members a better understand
ing of how powerful and impor
tant the word of God was in their
lives.
Another way Harrison used to
help his members was a 12-step
recovery program. This program
helped them deal with their prob
lems in their life.
It also helped people work
through the pain, make them
aware of who they are, why they
are the way they are. It teaches
them how to make healthy choic
es relating to problem solving;
allow them to make their own
choices; help them deal with ac
ceptanceand denial detachment;
how to move forward in life; and
to make healthy choices in their
lives.
“After completing the program,
they will become leaders that
will share the word with others,
debt would be reduced by offer
ing the more traditional market
gifts. Such items include hand
made crafts, baked goods and
kitchen pantry items, a silent
auction, and a toy shop.
The Holiday Market will take
place in Wesley Hall of Trinity
on the Hill United Methodist
Church located on Monte Sano
Avenue. Saturday, November
18, themarket will run from 9:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be
served. Sunday, November 19,

According to Harrison, he was
also involved in the 12-step pro
gram when he wasin college. He
had never dealt with the death of
his parents. “I lost my parents
and I never had time to grieve. It
was the psychology of religion
class that I learned I needed to
deal with the loss,” he said.
He got involved in a local
church in Atlanta in Decatur,
GA with their prayer team. As
Harrison observed how the pro
gram helped the people, he real
ized that was what he needed.
Harrison knows that recovery
does not work overnight. Every
one must love and reach out to
others.
Therefore, he is teaching his
congregation the importance of
inreach ministry, before doing
outreach ministry in the com
munity.
“We mustbe doers of the word,”
he said.
Harrison has my visions for
the church. One is exhorting the
Savior, evangelizing the sinners,
equipping the saints, and elevat
ing society.
He has been at Mount Hill for
two years. He received his mas
ters of Divinity from Morehouse
College.
